Chapter 87

Melanie was flabbergasted; Nathaniel had never treated her like that before. He began speaking softly, patiently coaxing her, even though she was being petty. Shocked, he forgot to be discreet and avoid making a scene; he simply snapped. Turning to Melanie, he felt distressed and wanted to sweet-talk her, yet also helpless. He sighed. "I'm a mess right now," he said. "I'll think of something soon. You should go home and rest."

He left Melanie alone at the cafe. Furious and resentful, she reflected on her recent good fortune in love and career. She envisioned fame, easily eclipsing Lily, and securing her place as MN Inc.'s first lady. Retirement was planned; the company's growth allowed her to hire additional staff. By then, MN Inc. wouldn't need Lily, and Melanie could finally enjoy peace of mind. She never anticipated Lily would obstruct her just a step from success.

Now, MN Inc. faced a crisis, and Nathaniel's attitude had drastically changedโ€”all because of Lily. If not for her interference, MN Inc. wouldn't be in this predicament.

Leaving the cafe, Lily said goodbye to James in the parking lot. "Thank you very much for your help today, Mr. Hudson," she said. "I'm sorry for troubling you." She thanked him sincerely, shaking his hand. James replied, shaking her hand, "It's my job; it wasn't much trouble. It's just" He hesitated, meeting Lily's questioning gaze. "I somewhat understood what you said earlier. Those two took your formula and falsely accused you of stealing it."

"Yes, but we can't use my statement as evidence in court, can we?" Lily asked with a faint smile.

"Unfortunately, no," James nodded, surprised by her calmness. "You don't seem worried about the lawsuit, Ms. Christian."

"As you saw, they're the plaintiffs, and I'm the defendant," Lily replied, her tone relaxed. "Have you ever seen a plaintiff beg a defendant? If not, I shouldn't worry."

James chuckled. "Years in this business, and I've never seen a plaintiff beg a defendant. I needn't worry about you. However, may I ask something?"

"Of course."

"Is the formula those two mentioned truly yours, or" James trailed off, but Lily understood.

She smiled. "There's a saying: one must not harm others, but one must also protect oneself. While I didn't initially know who they were, and my precautions were late, better late than never, wouldn't you agree?"

James smiled. "Indeed! And if you don't intend harm, you won't be harmed. You impress me, Ms. Christian."

"Don't flatter me, Mr. Hudson," Lily said. "You're professional, knowledgeable, and discerning. I still have much to learn from you!"

"It's been a pleasure meeting you, Ms. Christian!" James shook her hand again, more enthusiastically this time.

"Likewise," Lily replied, smiling.

After bidding James farewell, Lily planned to take a taxi to Rebirth. Jenny had said she needn't rush, but having officially accepted the position, Lily wanted to acclimate to her new environment quickly. Jenny had also said Lily could start in the laboratory after settling her personal affairs.
