Chapter 84

Nathaniel was surprised the man was Lilyโ€™s attorney, not who heโ€™d assumed.

โ€œLily, was this necessary? Why canโ€™t we just talk?โ€ Nathaniel leaned forward, fixing his gaze on Lily, awaiting a response.

Lily kept her eyes on her phone. โ€œExtreme? I agreed to meet you. If this is extreme, what do you call your underhanded tactics? Besides, you sued me. Having a lawyer here as a witness benefits us both. Isnโ€™t that what youโ€™d prefer?โ€

โ€œI said weโ€™d drop the lawsuit. Why are you being difficult? We were friends. Even if weโ€™re not anymore, letโ€™s not be enemies,โ€ Nathaniel pleaded, but Lily remained silent, engrossed in her phone. Melanie pursed her lips and said gently, โ€œLily, I know youโ€™re still angry about Nate and me, but it was a matter of the heart. We couldnโ€™t help it. You were always busy at the lab, and Nate needed someone. You shouldnโ€™t let personal feelings affect your work. MN Inc. is the result of our hard work. Do you want to destroy it because of personal issues?

โ€œDo you realize the problems the company faces because of your unreasonableness? Nate hasnโ€™t been eating or sleeping well. We donโ€™t know what Rebirth has told you, but weโ€™re all in the same industry. We might have to work together someday, so why make this ugly?โ€ Melanie pressed.

Lily ignored her, turning to James. โ€œJames, please note everything theyโ€™re saying. It might be useful in court.โ€

โ€œSure, Iโ€™ve got it,โ€ James nodded.

Lilyโ€™s uncooperative attitude finally angered Melanie. She threw her teaspoon on the table and stood abruptly. โ€œLily Christian! Whatโ€™s with your attitude? Are you here to show off? Do you think youโ€™ve won? Just because you tampered with the original formula, you think weโ€™ll beg for your help?โ€ Melanieโ€™s outburst attracted the attention of other patrons. Nathaniel watched, stirring his coffee.

Lily finally looked up from her phone. She smirked mockingly at Melanie. โ€œSorry, I missed that.โ€

โ€œYou! Stop pretending!โ€ Even eye contact intimidated Melanie, and her voice faltered.

โ€œWhat do you mean? MN Inc. sued me for stealing classified information and plagiarism. How could I tamper with your formula?โ€

Lily emphasized โ€œyour.โ€ โ€œLetโ€™s say I did tamper with the formula. With your amazing capabilities, wouldnโ€™t you solve it easily? Why come to me? Youโ€™re funny.โ€

Lilyโ€™s smile was fake. Her gleaming eyes fixed on Melanieโ€™s. Melanie felt her facade crumbling; she had no more lies. Her face flushed, speechless.

โ€œLily, thatโ€™s enough,โ€ Nathaniel gently took Melanieโ€™s hands. โ€œThis meeting was to settle this. Thereโ€™s no need for this.โ€
