Chapter 623
"Well said! If there's another reason for my grandfather's death, I'll investigate the truth!" Lily looked around. "Let's report this to the police!"
She produced her mobile phone. "Since we all have differing opinions, we might as well hand this matter over to the police. It's the fairest way to ensure justice, and when the investigation concludes, Grandpa can rest in peace."
Before she could dial, Jonathan restrained her arm. He frowned and said solemnly, "You can't call the police!"
"That's right. You can't call the police," the surrounding elders echoed. Surprisingly, they unanimously opposed contacting the police.
"The Lodge family is a plutocratic family with a century-old legacy. It would be a shame for our family if something like this were to become public, regardless of who is responsible. The Lodge family must resolve this internally. When we identify the guilty party, we will give them a fitting punishment. No outsiders shall interfere!"
Jonathan's words reflected the elders' consensus; they all nodded in agreement. "Granduncle Jonathan! This is a serious matter concerning my grandfather's death, not a trivial dispute. If someone intentionally caused this, they are guilty of murder. How can you settle this within the family?"
Lily was taken aback by the traditionalists' refusal to involve the police and their insistence on a private resolution.
"You shouldn't assume your education grants you carte blanche to act as you please. I assure you, as long as I live, I will have a say in the Lodge family. It's not your place to lecture me. We will investigate the cause of your grandfather's death. Nevertheless, if you dare to call the police and tarnish the hundreds of years of good name our family has earned, you are no longer a member of the Lodge family. Never return!" Jonathan glared at her, his words sharp and unwavering.
Lily observed the silent agreement among the others. She looked at Justin, who remained mute, seemingly oblivious to the unfolding drama.
"Justin, do you agree?" Lily asked, unable to contain herself.
"You and Justin cannot escape suspicion, and his opinion is irrelevant. I will temporarily assume leadership of the Lodge family while I investigate my father's death," Henry declared, adjusting his cufflinks with a straight back.
"Interesting. Justin assumed control of the Lodge family long ago. Do you believe you can seize his power with mere words?" Lily retorted.
"Lily!" Henry scolded. "I still consider you a member of this family. You must not be disrespectful!"
Lily attempted to respond, but a voice cut her short. "Enough!"
All eyes turned towards the source of the voice: Justin, slowly rising to his feet. He stood tall, his hands at his sides.
He turned to address them. "Lily, stop."
"Justin?!" She stared in disbelief, unprepared for his intervention.
"The truth of Grandpa's death will be revealed. No matter who the murderer is, no one will escape punishment!" he stated emphatically, each word deliberate.
His gaze swept across the assembled family, lingering on Lily before finally settling on Henry. "Uncle Henry, I understand you want to avoid suspicion falling on Lily and me. However, you've just returned from abroad and are unfamiliar with the company and family affairs. Company matters are straightforward; a few vice presidents can manage for now. As for family mattersโฆ"
"I can handle both the company and the family. Even a child could do it, so why can't I?" Henry scoffed disdainfully.
