Chapter 616
They must have thought so, aiming their accusations at her. However, it was absurd. She was so angry she laughed, prompting a concerned look from Alexander. "This is ridiculous! Why would I poison my grandfather? Moreover, I haven't returned to the Lodge family in years. My last visit was for his birthday; I stayed only two days! Grandpa passed away yesterday, and they accuse me of poisoning him? When and why would I do that?"
"All clues point to a trap. You know you're innocent. Since it's a trap, a motive is unnecessary. Besides, they could easily concoct one if they wished to blame you."
He was outraged by the accusation, but the situation remained unclear. If she was framed, why? Who benefited? Who was the perpetrator? Justin could be ruled out; he'd warned her against returning.
Henry Lodge, recently returned after a long absence, was the prime suspect. His sudden reappearance, coupled with reliable reports of his considerable influence within the family, made him a likely candidate. Though Justin headed the family, he was young. Henry's return enjoyed considerable support from the Lodge elders.
"Are you afraid?" Alexander gently held her hand, his voice loving.
"Why should I fear something I didn't do?" Lily smiled. "I'm curious who orchestrated this. If Grandpa's death wasn't accidental, who is the real murderer?!"
"The real murderer is likely the one framing you," Alexander said, squeezing her hands. "I'll help you find them."
Soon, the car arrived at the Lodge residence. He'd noticed something amiss en route from the airportโtwo cars had followed them since their departure. Edward had questioned it, but Alexander dismissed it, allowing the pursuit to continue. The cars vanished as they entered the Lodge compound, as if ensuring their arrival. Canopies and white banners lined the way, creating a somber atmosphere.
Lily's sadness at her grandfather's death was initially overshadowed by the unfolding conspiracy. Only upon seeing the flower wreaths and the servants' mourning attire did the full weight of her loss settle upon her, bringing a fresh wave of grief. Her eyes welled with tears; she had lost her grandfather forever.
Alexander embraced her, his usual empathy evident as he squeezed her shoulder.
The car pulled into the Lodge courtyard and stopped. A row of vehicles suggested a large funeral. Two people awaited them. Alexander noticed Lily had stopped crying; she dabbed her tears, her expression remarkably calm.
"I can do this," she murmured firmly.
He raised an eyebrow, offering his support. "I never doubted it."
Lily opened the car door. Fearless, she was determined to clear her name and uncover the perpetrator if her grandfather had indeed been murdered. Alexander and Edward followed as she descended the steps, only to be immediately surrounded by a group of people.
