Chapter 525: The Russells were a prosperous and prominent family, far surpassing others in wealth and influence. Alexander's father's generation had produced many descendants. His grandmother was still alive but elderly and unable to manage family affairs. Consequently, Alexander was responsible for all family matters, both large and small. His uncles, aunts, and other relatives deferred to his authority.

Lily, however, was unaware of his siblings. She was surprised when Brandon addressed Alexander as "Fourth Russell."

Alexander gently patted Lily's hand. "That's because I'm the fourth child."

"Huh?" Lily exclaimed. "How did I not know about this?"

"Members of the Russell family aren't supposed to mention it, so not many outsiders know. Those who did know stopped talking about it years ago. We've gradually forgotten, too," Alexander said nonchalantly.

Life was fleeting. People came and went, and memories faded. How many would truly be remembered after death?

"If so your brothers and sisters" she asked cautiously, sensing the sensitivity of the topic.

"My brothers," Alexander replied. "I had three older brothers, but" He paused, his deep eyes meeting hers. "They are all dead."

"What?!" Lily's eyes widened in shock. Though somewhat prepared, his words still took her aback. Three brothers, all deceased?

"Were theysick?" Lily wondered. The Russells were powerful; surely they could have protected their descendants.

"My eldest brother died very young. My second brother, despite being carefully raised, died in a car accident at age six. My third brother died of illness, or so I heard. I was young and didn't know much," Alexander said calmly, his demeanor unaffected. His voice betrayed little emotion.

Yet, Lily felt a pang of heartbreak at his composure. She instinctively hugged him tightly. His three older brothers were gone. He must have endured immense pressure growing up. Her own difficult childhood paled in comparison.

"My mother couldn't bear the grief and died soon after. My father followed two years later. I suppose they're reunited in the afterlife," Alexander said, a hint of bitterness in his voice.

"Alex, I" Lily whispered, her heart aching. She never knew the Russells harbored such tragic secrets. His closest family were gone. No wonder he seemed so detached.

"You have me," Lily said softly. Alexander turned and gently kissed her forehead. "There's no need to dwell on this. It's in the past, and I don't feel sad anymore."

"I won't, but I'll be here with you," Lily replied, wanting to remain by his side forever.
