Chapter 481

Olivia took leave following her injury and her mother's funeral.

A fire in Sapphine City caused a significant stir. Despite being old and dilapidated, the buildings still housed residents. The fire resulted in seven deaths, nine severe injuries, and 23 minor injuries. The severity of the incident attracted the attention of the local government, which, in addition to offering condolences to those affected, launched a thorough investigation into the cause. However, the narrow, unmonitored alleys and the late hour, when many residents were asleep, hampered the investigation. By the time the fire was noticed, it had already spread significantly.

Initial speculation centered on faulty wiring, sparking public outrage and accusations of government negligence in enforcing regular maintenance and renovations on these older buildings. This led to a series of investigations and accountability measures across relevant departments, along with expedited maintenance and renovations in other older communities. The incident and its aftermath dominated recent news reports.

Lily found the news reports upsetting, likely due to having witnessed the fire firsthand. She switched off the television and sighed. With Olivia on leave, Lily herself hadn't been to the laboratory for three days, lacking inspiration and new ideas. Her mind felt blank, though she knew she shouldn't let her emotions affect her work, especially the progress on the Southbank Soap. Despite this, she struggled to control herself.

"The company will send condolences and flowers to Olivia's mother's funeral," Alexander said, working from home and staying with Lily all day. Although her doctor had discharged her, deeming her only in need of rest, Alexander remained concerned, showing his care through actions rather than words.

While remote work was convenient thanks to computers and mobile phones, some meetings had to be canceled or postponed.

"Okay," Lily nodded. "Is Edward still with her?" She hadn't seen Edward in days. Alexander confirmed he'd sent Edward to care for Olivia, which was reassuring.

Olivia had lived with her mother, and now, after her mother's passing, she was alone. Lily worried about Olivia's emotional state without companionship. While quiet, Edward was ideally suited to provide support at this difficult time. He was capable of caring for Olivia without intruding, avoiding potentially upsetting questions.

Alexander nodded. "Olivia's rented house burned down, so I've had Edward take her to a small apartment I own."

"Thank you!" Lily exclaimed, acknowledging his considerable support.

"You're talking nonsense again!" He gently smoothed her hair. "What do you want to eat today?" Lily shook her head, lacking an appetite. "If you don't have an appetite, how about something sour to whet your appetite? Or something sweet to boost your dopamine levels?" Alexander paused. "Brunswick stew?"

Lily smiled at the concern in his eyes. Before she could answer, he said, "Don't say no!"

"I wasn't going to," she replied. "It sounds delicious. I'd like that." How could she refuse such thoughtful consideration? Alexander smiled in satisfaction, leaned over, kissed her cheek, and said, "Wait for me."

He stood and headed to the kitchen. His phone rang. Checking the caller ID, he saw it was his assistant and answered, "Hello?"
