Chapter 448
Derrickโs eyes, cold as laser beams, scanned Lily from head to toe. His gaze lacked warmth, expressing displeasure. A shiver ran down Lilyโs spine, but she quickly dismissed her fear; he was insignificant to her. Adjusting her perspective, she stood tall, meeting his gaze firmly.
Derrick was surprised by the young womanโs courage. He frowned, about to speak, when Alexander interrupted. Having observed the exchange from a distance, Alexander stepped in, joining Lily. "Mr. Tanner," he said. Derrick, surprised, exclaimed, "Alexander Russell? I assumed youโd sent someone else. I didn't expect to see you here."
Alexander responded smoothly, "I was delayed by the heavy snow." Derrick nodded, his demeanor considerably more civil than it had been with Lily. Alexander smiled politely and turned to Lilyโs companion. "And this is?"
Derrick pulled Benedictโs sleeve. "My son, Benedict. Benedict, this is Alexander Russell, director of La Beautรฉ Group. You can call him Alex."
Lily was astonished. Benedict Tanner? From the Tanner family of Ruby City? His presence at her grandfatherโs birthday party confirmed her suspicion.
This was incredible. The slightly bad-tempered, woodcarving teen was from the renowned Tanner family. The world felt surprisingly small.
Benedict quietly mouthed, "Mr. Russell," clearly uncomfortable with the informal "Alex." Alexander didn't mind, but Derrick, displeased by his son's disobedience, glared harshly.
"Alex, the banquet is about to begin. Let's go in," Derrick said, reaching for Benedictโs sleeve. Benedict, however, stepped away, unwilling to be touched. Derrickโs face darkened with anger.
Lily intervened, addressing Derrick as Alexander had: "Mr. Tanner, I have some unfinished business with Benedict. May I borrow him for a moment?"
Derrick frowned. "Who are you?" He didn't recognize her.
Alexander gently put his arm around Lily. "She's myโฆ fiancรฉe," he said, catching himself before saying "wife."
The others were surprised. "Fiancรฉe?"
