Chapter 37

Nathaniel's worried expression gradually gave way to sullenness. He stared at Lily and asked, "Are you threatening me?"

"I only want what I deserve," Lily replied simply. She wasn't greedy, but she was done giving away what rightfully belonged to her.

Nathaniel chuckled, a little stiffly. He loosened his tie, unbuttoned his shirt collar, and stared down at Lily, arms akimbo. "What do you deserve? For the past few years, I've paid for your food, clothes, and rent. What else could you possibly deserve?"

Lily found his self-righteousness ridiculous. How could she have been so blind, so fascinated by this man for so long? Her anger wasn't directed at Nathaniel, but at herself. The realization made her laugh aloud.

As Lily remained silent, Nathaniel continued his critique, assuming her guilt. "Don't think so highly of yourself because you made a few perfumes. I provided the raw materials and the lab. Where would you be without my support?"

Lily slowly raised her head. "So, you admit I developed most of MN Inc.'s perfumes?"

"So what? Do you think there would be any sales without the company's operations, marketing, and advertising?" Nathaniel's argument seemed plausible at first glance.

Lily didn't refute his logical fallacies; she simply smiled. "It's good you admit that, at least. Since we've reached this point, there's no need to continue this conversation." She turned to leave, her goal accomplished.

"Hold on!" Nathaniel couldn't let her go so easily. He caught up, grabbing her coat. Something fell from her pocket. Startled, he reached for it, but Lily snatched it up, clutching it to her chest.

"You recorded our conversation?!" Nathaniel stared at her in disbelief. He hadn't expected this from the usually naive and obedient Lily. His face hardened. "Give that to me!"

Lily refused, stepping back, her grip tightening. "Why are you afraid if you have a clear conscience?"

Nathaniel didn't try to snatch the device again. Instead, he laughed. "How naive! Do you think this will change anything? I can claim the recording is fabricated, that you tricked me. Besides, do you think I haven't made other preparations? I'll see you in court, Lily!"

Lily nodded and turned, but someone blocked her path. Nathaniel stood there, calmly lighting a cigarette he'd just pulled from his pocket. He clearly had a plan to prevent her departure.

"You intend to use force?" Lily raised an eyebrow.

"I didn't want it to come to this. After all, we've been together for quite some time, haven't we?"
