Nathaniel reflected on his mother's words and realized he was beginning to view Lily as the Lodge family's most mysterious and noble member.
"Lily," he said, raising his head to look at her. His voice caught in his throat as he spoke her name.
Lily remained silent.
"Your woman is still inside," she said, gesturing toward the operating room. "Hold your horses and wait until she comes out before you make a scene." Nathaniel was silent. Olivia was, too. Olivia had never seen Lily so vicious before. It was almost comical; seeing Nathaniel's restrained attempts at speech was quite entertaining.
"What happened to Mel?" Nathaniel sighed.
"She followed me," Lily replied. "She tried to grab me, lost her footing, and fell." After a pause, she added, "She seems to be pregnant and has bled heavily."
"Miscarriage?" Nathaniel asked. He apparently knew about Melanie's pregnancy. Lily confessed, "The doctor said it's possible."
"Huh" He breathed a sigh of relief. He showed no sadness and seemed entirely at ease. This didn't escape Lily and Olivia's notice; they both found his lack of emotion chilling. It was his child, his blood. Did he feel even a flicker of remorse?
"You said she followed you?" Nathaniel asked after a moment's thought.
Lily, initially startled by his callousness, realized it wasn't directed at her. She simply nodded. "She said I forced you to break up? Nate, what did you tell her? Why would you let her have such a delusion?"
"Did she say that?" Nathaniel was surprised. He hadn't expected Melanie to confront Lily with those accusations. Breaking up with Melanie had clearly angered her.
Lily remained silent, glancing at him.
"So, you just pushed her?" he pressed.
Lily replied coldly, her gaze fixed on him, "I didn't touch her!"
"Okay, you didn't," Nathaniel said, a chill running down his spine at her cold eyes. He'd always assumed Lily was gentle and submissive, someone who would do as he said. He'd never truly cared for her, and now she was clearly no longer obedient. Her glare felt like a knife. He'd ignored her too much, underestimated her.
Staring intently at her, Nathaniel, overcome with emotion, finally whispered, "Actually, even if you did, it doesn't matter."
Lily looked confused; Olivia remained silent. (Internal monologue: What a scumbag! Melanie, lying inside, would probably faint from anger if she heard this.)
"I'll say it one last time. I didn't do anything!" Lily said, her body as cold as ice.
