Chapter 23
Alexanderโs car sped down the road, quickly outdistancing the vehicles behind them.
โNate must have sent people to follow me,โ Lily said, turning to Alexander. โProbably to see if Iโm still in contact with Rebirth.โ
โHuh?โ Alexander raised an eyebrow. โDid you promise him you wouldnโt return to Rebirth?โ
โI didnโt promise him anything, but he probably thinks he convinced me,โ Lily clarified. She hadnโt promised Nathaniel anything, but he believed his lies had fooled her again. He remained the same, assuming his familiarity with the old Lily, who had readily trusted him.
However, Lily had witnessed Nathanielโs betrayal and affair firsthand. Sheโd seen his illicit relationship with Melanie, shattering her trust. How could she ever believe anything he said again?
โSo, whatโs your plan now?โ Alexander asked.
He was intensely curious about her response, eager to see how she would make them pay. Frankly, that Hallโa scoundrelโhad hurt Lily deeply, and Alexander had planned to seek justice for her. But it seemed his wife didn't entirely need his protection; she had her own methods.
Lily looked calmly ahead. โHe wants to hold a press conference and make me the scapegoat for what happened during the competition.โ
โOh?โ Alexanderโs voice was calm, his eyes cold. โWhat time is the press conference?โ
โHe didnโt say, but I guess itโs tomorrow or tonight.โ
โWhy?โ
โBecause heโs desperate,โ Lily explained, turning to Alexander. โLast nightโs event thoroughly discredited him and ruined MN Inc.โs reputation. He canโt wait any longer. Whatโs more, the organizing committee is investigating. We need to resolve this quickly.โ
โAre you going to comply with Nathanielโs wishes?โ Alexander asked, though he doubted Lily would be so obedient.
โUnless Iโm out of my mind,โ Lily retorted, โWhat was once mine will be mine again.โ
In Alexanderโs eyes, Lilyโs face was as tranquil as he remembered. Her beauty was different; it wasnโt a fleeting first impression, but something deeper, making her even more irresistible. He tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear, saying affectionately, โTurn to me whenever you need me.โ
Those simple words warmed Lilyโs heart. During her years with Nathaniel, sheโd always been independent. Heโd been too busy with his business and socializing, never having time for dinner, movies, or even just listening. She only felt his warmth for a few days around new product launches; otherwise, she felt inferior to MN Inc.โs employees. If she complained, heโd demand she be more generous and reasonable, less irritable. Over time, sheโd grown accustomed to it.
Hearing Alexanderโs words now, she welled up. Instinctively, she leaned on his shoulder, whispering, โI will.โ Alexander was startled by her initiative. Her whispered words brought a smile to his lips.
โWhere are we going now?โ Lily asked softly, surprisingly calm in his arms.
โTo dinner,โ he replied. โYou havenโt eaten yet, have you?โ
โHow did you know?โ Lily exclaimed, astonished. It was as if he had a monitor on her.
