"Your Highness, I believe the Duke's motivations extend beyond the Queen, at least partially," Edward said gravely.

"Oh?" Ross asked inquisitively. "What leads you to think that?"

"I spent time in his laboratory, witnessing the creation of these… things. Fred's ambition surpasses mere immortality." He paused. "If eternal life were the sole goal, experiments beyond R20 would be unnecessary. Besides…"

Edward turned to Mike. "As Mr. Corden is also aware, the laboratory contains numerous poisonous plants and drugs— hardly essential for achieving immortality. Therefore, I suspect his aims are broader than serving the Queen."

Ross nodded thoughtfully. "It does seem plausible. But why Hyderland? The risks are far greater here. Why not Yudonia? It would be far more convenient for a Duke, and the Queen's favorite, to conduct such experiments there."

"Forgive my bluntness," Alexander interjected, "but how do you know he hasn't conducted similar experiments in your country, Your Highness?"

Ross was taken aback.

"You weren't even aware of Fred's clandestine activities. How can you be certain he hasn't established similar labs in Yudonia?"

Ross's face hardened. Yet, upon reflection, Alexander's words resonated. Perhaps such labs existed in Yudonia, unbeknownst to him. A chill ran down his spine.

"I must make a call and investigate!"

As Ross reached for his phone, Alexander stopped him. "You can't, Your Highness. Remember your itinerary—you're supposed to have arrived in Eldermere."

Ross halted. "That's right… I must maintain the appearance of being under Fred's control. Alerting anyone in Yudonia would jeopardize our efforts."

Lowering his phone, Ross barely controlled his fury. "What in God's name is Fred up to?"

"Only that he's up to no good."

A knock at the door silenced them.

Austin's voice cut through the tension. "Alex? My granduncle has been kidnapped!"

Stunned, Alexander sprang to his feet. "I'll be right back." He rushed to the door. "What did you say?"
