Chapter 225
Melanie expected the doctor to schedule her surgery. Instead, he prescribed medication.
Holding the prescription, she was puzzled. "Didn't you say this medicine wasn't suitable? Why are you prescribing it?"
"You have inflammation that needs treatment before surgery," the doctor explained. After a pause, he added, "You must abstain from sex for a while. Your condition is serious. Continued activity could affect your uterus."
Melanie barely registered the doctor's warnings. She knew her health was poor, but not this bad. She felt ashamed, remembering the doctor's gaze. Fortunately, no one recognized her. She went home, took her medicine with water, carefully stored the prescription in her bag, and lay down to rest. Luckily, Nathaniel was busy and left her alone, giving her time to meet Frank.
'Frank' The thought churned her stomach. She shifted uncomfortably. This couldn't continue. She needed to find a way to get Lily into Frank's bed; only then would she be free. The challenge was doing it without being traced.
Melanie tossed and turned, unable to sleep. She eventually heard the sound of a door openingโNathaniel was home.
Fearing he'd notice something was wrong, she pretended to be asleep.
Nathaniel entered the bedroom and sat beside her. Melanie felt him pull the blanket higher, even with her eyes closed. She heard him sigh softly.
"Mel, Mel" He whispered her name twice, hesitant to continue.
Ignoring him, she feigned sleep, but he persisted. "Mel, are you asleep?" His voice was soft but insistent. He seemed determined to wake her. She finally pretended to stir, rubbing her eyes and yawning. "You're back."
"Yeah."
He leaned down to hug and kiss her cheek. "Did I wake you? Thank you for your hard work."
"I'm fine. I've been asleep a long time," Melanie replied, shaking her head and opening her eyes. She noticed his tired, irritable expression. "What's wrong? You look unhappy."
Nathaniel forced a smile. "About your perfume formula do you think it needs adjusting, Mel?"
He spoke cautiously, fearing her displeasure, but he needed to ask.
The formula? What was wrong with it? Wasn't everything fine? You're the one who said it was okay.
