Lily's medical skills impressed Fred, but he envisioned a more critical use for her. Even if he hadn't, a strong-willed person like her would never willingly serve him. Therefore, keeping her alive served no purpose. "Bravo, Lily!" Fred breathed, composing himself. The experience was a memorable lesson. As someone who constantly plotted against others, he never expected to fall for such a simple ruse. He wasn't incapable of seeing through it, but he'd lost his composure, believing himself ill.
"I guess you won this round, Lily, but too bad you're not going to make it out alive," he said. "The conditions are nearly ready, and we'll implement the experiment's final phase. Are you ready?" Fred smiled menacingly, thinking, Yes, she played me like a fool, but I made the deal to save myself anyway. I should be happy she didn't poison me. Who cares if I lost to her this time? I'll still have the last laugh.
"It doesn't matter if I'm ready. What matters is whether you are. How are you so sure you'll succeed? If you failโ"
Fred interrupted, "If I fail, I can always try again. Don't worry."
Lily was puzzled.
Seeing her confusion, Fred laughed and walked away, as if victorious. Lily fell into thought as she watched the door close.
When dawn broke, Alexander realized the physical demands of caring for infants. He had even stayed up all night watching over them. After the sleeping medication wore off, the two infants awoke in the middle of the night and began crying incessantly, likely due to their unfamiliar surroundings and separation from their mother. Alexander prepared formula, fed them, changed their diapers, and then cradled one in each arm. It took considerable effort to soothe them, only for them to cry again whenever he laid them down. This continued until daybreak.
So, when Austin and Mike awoke, they saw Alexander with pronounced dark circles under his eyes. It was only one night, but he looked haggard and exhausted, as if two weeks had passed. "You... haven't slept all night?" Austin exclaimed, shocked.
