Lily turned to Fred. "How can I be sure the babies you gave my husband are mine?"
Fred, stunned and upset, bolted to his feet. "Are you trying to trick me?"
"No, I just want to ensure they're mine, not someone else's you kidnapped," Lily replied, a possibility she hadn't considered until now. She almost wept, seeing Alexander carefully checking the babies' breathing, his usually steady finger trembling. She'd always known him to be calm.
Lily never expected to remain at the embassy so long, unable to leave even after giving birth. She suspected she might never escape. She truly hated Fred for his experiments, for the separation from her family, for the chaos in the world. "Where the hell could I find two babies of similar age?" The thought hadn't occurred to Fred.
"I'm trying to make a deal with you! I don't need your babies! Do you think I'd bother deceiving you?!" he shouted. "Give me the antidote now!"
"How would I know what you need them for? Nick is just a child, yet you want to keep him, right?" Lily responded blandly, enjoying his agitation. The angrier he got, the more likely she was to get the answers she wanted. She was curious why he insisted on keeping Nick despite having the antidote.
"That's different! I carefully selected him toโ" He stopped abruptly, catching himself, his anger intensifying. He realized Lily had been playing him. "Lily, I warn you. You'll die if you continue this!"
Lily smiled. "Oh? Aren't I going to die anyway?"
Lily relentlessly provoked him, knowing he couldn't kill her now. His threats held no sway over someone who didn't fear death. Though she didn't want to die, she knew her fate if she couldn't escape. Nothing mattered if she died sooner or later.
"All right, enough stalling! Where's the antidote?" Fred demanded, extending his hand. "If you break your word, I promise to take your babies from your husband! I can't kill you now, but I can make your life hell!" He chuckled menacingly.
Lily raised an eyebrow, her gaze unwavering.
"Give me the antidote!" Fred shouted again.
