Chapter 217

Lily didn't answer; she'd seen a car parked across the road. Its presence was striking at that hour and in that location. The back door was wide open, and a tall man emerged. He paused, then walked toward Lily.

"Lily?" Olivia called again when Lily remained silent. Following Lily's gaze, Olivia saw the man approaching. She squinted, even in the dim light of the streetlamp, she could make out his features.

The scene felt like something out of a movie, Olivia thought. The man was unremarkable, yet he seemed to shine, captivating. Even without an introduction, Olivia knew who he was—from Lily's reaction and their mutual gaze.

"So, it was you," Lily said.

She'd guessed Alexander was near the lab, based on Edward's earlier messages, Alexander's replies, and the photo he'd sent. However, she'd been focused on her experiment and couldn't be distracted.

"Why aren't you wearing the clothes I brought you?" Alexander frowned, noticing Lily's long-sleeved shirt. He removed his jacket and placed it on her.

"I was busy and forgot. Seems I don't need it now," Lily said, tugging at the jacket, appreciating its warmth.

"Can we go home?" Alexander asked.

Lily nodded and turned to Olivia, who stood open-mouthed, staring at Alexander, clearly shocked. Lily was amused; it was a natural reaction. She momentarily felt silly for wondering if Olivia had unusual taste in men—Alexander's striking good looks were undeniable.

"Olivia, let's go together! It's hard to get a cab this late. We'll take you home," Lily said.

Olivia vehemently shook her head. "No, no, I'll get a cab. I don't want to be a third wheel. You go; don't worry about me. Seriously!"

"Don't be silly. It's late. How will I know you're safe?" Lily put an arm around Olivia and guided her toward the car.

Olivia couldn't escape and followed. Alexander watched helplessly, trailing behind. Lily opened the car door; the interior was considerably warmer. Edward tilted his head and called out, "Ma—"

Then he saw Olivia, who'd entered first. He was stunned.

"I—it's you!" Olivia pointed at Edward, quickly covering her mouth, remembering she was in someone else's car. Despite this, her wide eyes remained fixed on him. Thoughts raced through her mind; she quickly pieced it together.
