“Is something wrong with the experiment?” the queen asked softly, hesitating. Although she looked forward to it, she always felt it might be flawed. However, she knew little about science and couldn't identify any potential flaws. Fred always claimed Lily was bluffing, but this felt different.

“R10’s biggest issue is that it’s never been tested on a living person,” Lily explained solemnly. “Nobody knows its risks or success rate. But Fred insisted on proceeding, even tempting you to participate. Do you know why?”

The queen hesitated, resisting the implication, before asking, “Why?”

“Because you are the final subject, Your Majesty.” Lily’s words hung in the air.

The queen’s eyes widened in confusion, then widened further in shock as understanding dawned. Lily, seeing the queen’s expression, smirked. “That’s right. The experiment’s crucial final phase isn’t me, but you. You’re Fred’s guinea pig. He’ll determine the experiment’s success through you.” She spoke with unsettling calm, as if discussing an ordinary procedure. She showed no fear, despite her crucial role.

“As I said, greed knows no bounds,” Lily continued. “Your Majesty, this experiment was never intended to benefit you. It was for Fred. If it succeeds, he’ll use it to prolong his life. Then you’ll become a puppet, or… well, I have no idea what else he might do.” Lily shook her head. “However, Fred can always conduct another experiment if this one fails.”

The queen sipped water, her hands trembling. Trying to appear calm, she said, “Y-you’re just guessing. You just want to escalate things between me and Fred so you can escape.”

“Do you honestly think that?” Lily knelt before the queen. “Your Majesty, you know I’m right. Anyone can rule a nation. You’ve governed well for decades and love your people. I understand your reluctance to relinquish control at your age. Fred simply exploited that.” Lily’s tone was warm, as if addressing an ordinary older woman.

The queen sighed. “Even if you’re right, and I’m willing to cooperate, what then? I’m a hostage, just like you. How can I protect you?”

Lily noticed the queen’s hesitation. “No, you have a way.”
