Chapter 208

Melanie hadn't paid close attention earlier; she'd been scared. Looking at Frank now, she saw how thin he wasโ€”much thinner than average. She understood the reason and felt uneasy. Having done what he'd done, he might as well have one foot in hell. Melanie didn't know if his actions would be discovered, or how long he'd last in the industry. She knew she couldn't rely on him in the long run. She'd thought she'd found a powerful ally, believing she'd win in life by maintaining their relationship. Reality, however, delivered a harsh awakening.

One can't depend entirely on a single person. Melanie knew she couldn't rely solely on Nathaniel, or pin all her hopes on Frank. She needed additional support; only sufficient backing would make her feel secure.

Even so, Melanie wasn't in a hurry. Frank could still be useful in the meantime. She could withdraw her support after getting Lily from him and fully exploiting him.

She left the room and took the elevator. Checking her phone, she saw numerous messages and missed calls from Nathaniel. "What happened? Why is he so anxious?" she wondered.

She calmly switched off her phone and put it in her purse. Then she left the hotel and took a cab. Nathaniel was waiting for her at home, just as she expected.

"Where have you been, Mel? Why didn't you answer my calls or messages?!"

Melanie froze, putting on a frightened expression. She blinked several times and asked, "W-Why are you back already, Nate?"

"Where have you been? Tell me! Tell me now!" Nathaniel looked furious.

"I-I'll tell you if you promise not to be angry," Melanie said, shrinking her neck in fear.

"Okay, then tell me!"

Nathaniel had come home early to spend time with Melanie. He hadn't expected to find the apartment empty, and he didn't know where she'd gone. Her unanswered calls and messages had increased his anxiety, uncertainty, and irritability.

"I-I went to the lab."

"The lab? I called them, and they said you left hours ago! Didn't I tell you not to go to the lab? What were you doing there? Why are you so disobedient?! Didn't you think of the baby's well-being?!" He spoke angrily, pressing his hands to his lips. Melanie hadn't expected him to call the lab, but the lie was easily covered.

"I went to the lab to check on the new product. After all, it's a formula I wrote myself. I hadn't worked on it in a long time, so I was afraid something would go wrong. I'm doing this for MN Inc. and our future!" Melanie pouted, lowering her head. "After spending time in the lab, I felt unwell. I went to the hospital for a checkup, thinking it might be from inhaling too many fumes." Melanie began to cry. "Do you think I don't care about the baby, that you're the only one concerned? The baby is in my belly. I care more than anyone!"

"How dare you yell at me?! You promised to look after me and love me for the rest of your life. That's all a lie! You only care about the baby, not me. I should just abort it, and we can go our separate ways!" Turning, she started to leave. Nathaniel was anxious, seeing her cry uncontrollably.
