Mike rubbed his neck, still smarting from Verneโs near-grasp. โThat was too close,โ he muttered. He glanced at Fred, who watched the altercation with detached amusement, his eyes narrowed in scrutiny.
After a brief exchange of blows, the two men shoved each other back. Verne was about to charge Alexander again when Fred intervened. โThatโs enough, Verne. Theyโre our guests.โ
Verne complied, returning to his original position and fixing Alexander with a steady gaze. โYouโre an excellent fighter, Mr. Russell. Your country certainly boasts a wide range of talents.โ Fredโs clap lacked sincerity.
Alexander smoothed his shirt, replying blandly, โAnd your man is quite impressive as well.โ
โHeโs just adequate. Donโt mind him,โ Fred said dismissively, barely glancing at his guard. Verne, however, remained impassive, his stare unwavering. Fred cleared his throat. โI understand your concern about Lilyโs absence. However, I still hope to collaborate with her. Iโll explore ways to help you. And Hyderlandโs police are quite efficient, you know. If you canโt locate Lily, you should certainly call them. With your connection to Secretary Rollins, Iโm confident youโll find her quickly.โ
After a pause, he added, โI have other matters to attend to. Please excuse me.โ
Mike felt a surge of anxiety. โDamn it! Weโre leaving without accomplishing anything?โ
Alexander rose, mirroring Fredโs movement. โWeโll see ourselves out,โ he said casually. โYouโre right about one thing. Finding someone with Hyderlandโs police is simple, just as creating trouble here is difficult. You appreciate Hyderlandโs safety, I presume?โ
Fred stopped and turned, a smile playing on his lips. โYes, I do. I enjoy everything here! Please do let me know if you hear from Lily. Iโd be delighted to meet her.โ
โCertainly.โ
Fred departed. As they left the embassy, Mike muttered, โSeriously? Weโre leaving empty-handed?โ Heโd expected helpful information, but instead, theyโd been treated like fools. โHow can that man pretend not to know where Lily is when itโs obvious theyโre holding her? What an asshole!โ
Heโd encountered unreasonable people in business, but he never anticipated such blatant duplicity from someone of Fredโs stature.
โWhat else could we have done?โ Alexander asked calmly. โDrop our charade, cause a scene, and get expelled? What would that accomplish? Ask the government for intervention?โ
Mike was speechless, but he knew Alexander was right, despite his simmering rage.
