Alexander stopped before the innermost door, carefully studying its high-tech security measuresโfingerprint and iris scanners. His own prints would be useless; he needed another approach. After a moment's consideration, he retrieved something from his pouch. He affixed Lily's artificial fingerprint to his own finger and tentatively touched it to the scanner. The couple had created these for emergencies. Heโd hoped it would prove helpful, and it seemed his hunch was correct; Lily had been key research personnel here.
Suddenly, a voice shouted, "Who the hell are you?!" Taken aback, Alexander realized someone was still awake. The reflection in the door revealed the person pointing a finger at him. After a pause, Alexander slowly turned, chuckling. "Hey, I'm here to rescue you."
"Bullsh*t! You're a spy!" The man disbelieved him, grabbing a nearby iron rod. "Put your hands up!"
Alexander could easily subdue him, but sighed, "Well, since you don't believe me, I have little choice." He swiftly kicked the man, sending him sprawling with a loud thump. The falling iron rod struck something, triggering the alarm.
'Sh*t!' Alexander thought, pinching the bridge of his nose. Should he proceed or retreat? Then, commotion erupted down the corridor. "Intruder! Who is it?!" A hand grabbed his arm, pulling him away.
To his surprise and annoyance, he saw Edward. "Edward?! What the hell are you doing here?!" While pleased to see Edwardโwho knew the facility wellโAlexander was also upset; Edward had disobeyed his bossโs orders.
