Alexander knew Edward wouldn't listen unless he appealed to his family, so he tried reasoning with him, mentioning his wife and child.
Edward hesitated at the mention of Olivia but soon replied, "No, I have more important things to do. I'm familiar with the place; I should be the one to go. Otherwise, my infiltration would have been for nothing. Besides, most of the organization's personnel have left, and those remaining are low-level. Don't worry about me; I'll just be searching for someone, not engaging in combat." He chuckled, attempting to sound nonchalant, a rare occurrence.
Alexander, however, wasn't fooled. He shook his head. "Cut the act. We both know what kind of place that is. You're already infected. Another exposure could kill you!"
"That's why I should go! I have nothing to lose. You're different; you have too much to live for. I wouldn't have survived, wouldn't have had a good life without you." Edward took a deep breath. "If anything happens to me, please help care for Olivia and our child."
"I can't feel sad thinking about my wife and child," he muttered.
"What did you say?" Olivia's horrified voice echoed from the doorway. She nearly dropped her bag, her eyes wide with shock. "You're infected? With what?" She rushed to him, grabbing his shoulders, searching his face for any sign of illness.
"What kind of infection? Tell me! What the hell are you planning? Why can't you tell me anything? I'm your wife, for God's sake!" Tears streamed down her face.
Edward was taken aback by her sudden appearance. "Liv, why areโ"
A bodyguard rushed in, explaining, "Mrs. Sullivan insisted on seeing you, sir, and wouldn't listen to usโ" He was cut short.
"I wouldn't have found out if I hadn't barged in! How long were you planning to hide this? What the hell were you thinking?!" Olivia's fury was palpable. She was overwhelmed by anger and sorrow, completely unprepared for this revelation. She hadn't known he'd returned to work for Alexander, or that he was ill.
I wonder when I would have found out if I hadn't overheard him, she thought. Her anger warred with her worry; she wanted to strike him, but couldn't bring herself to do so knowing his condition.
"What the hell were you thinking?!" She pounded weakly on his chest.
Edward could only offer an apology, allowing her to vent.
Alexander seized the moment. "Olivia, it's true. Edward is infected, but we can cure him."
