"If you really want it, you must seize every opportunity!" he said meaningfully, then hung up.

Melanie didn't understand what he meant until he sent a text with an address. It was in Sappliine, not far from the laboratory. She instantly understood: Frank was on his way! Holding the phone with a trembling hand, she hadn't expected his return so soon. This was clearly a tryst, and she honestly wanted to refuse. Sappliine, unlike Middle Valley, meant the risk of encountering acquaintances, including Nathaniel. The thought of someone seeing them filled her with dread.

Her heart was conflicted. Frank's visit seemed casual, his words laid-back; yet, his decision was ruthless. Refusal meant rejecting him, forfeiting her advantage in the annual perfume competition's judging.

Having already taken the first step, turning back was impossible. She would grit her teeth and continue, finding a way to protect herself before her body gave out. Weighing her options, Melanie quickly decided. She went downstairs, took a cab to the address—a hotel. Frank typically chose hotels when traveling, rarely staying in one place for more than a few days.

After he left Sappliine, she wouldn't know his whereabouts, but a short stay sufficed; she only wanted to use him.

Quickly lowering her head to avoid security cameras, Melanie wore a scarf to tightly cover her face. She entered the elevator, found Frank's room, and knocked. The door opened after a few seconds, but instead of the imagined embrace, Frank simply turned and went back inside.

He hadn't changed; still in shirt and pants, though his shirt was partially unbuttoned and his hair was unkempt.

Somewhat startled, Melanie entered, closed, and relocked the door before removing her sunglasses and scarf. She hugged his waist from behind. "What's wrong? Aren't you happy to see me?"

Frank patted her hand, then sat on the couch. Squinting, he gazed up at her, lowered his head, and picked up a thin tube. Melanie then saw what was on the table—something she'd seen on television but never used. She instantly understood, and goosebumps erupted on her skin.
