Fabian softened his tone when speaking to Anastasia. Anastasia responded coldly, "Don't you know what kind of people these so-called famous doctors are? Besides, don't forget how I ended up like this. Let's not bring that up again."
The mention of the doctors reminded her of Rhea and her own ordeal. 'If it weren't for my cousin,' she thought, 'I wouldn't have needed doctors. Yet Aunt Maria thought she was doing me a favor. Just thinking about it makes me nauseous!'
Fabian, realizing his and his wife's mistake, pursed his lips. He glanced at the pale Cameron and pointed. "Fine! You believe them, you say your father has taken Alexander's pill, but why isn't he improving?"
Anastasia's gaze followed Fabian's. Though silent, her anxiety was palpable. She had waited too long; her faith was wavering.
Fabian, noticing her silence, felt vindicated. He added smugly, "As you can see, I'm not trying to cause trouble, but I'm more experienced at judging character. This man is an outsider, unlikely to be sincere. If anything goes wrong, only we'll suffer. Don't you understand? I'll find your father a good doctor, and I guarantee they can cure him. He doesn't look poisoned; he's just ill. Don't let others deceive you!"
He took two steps forward, then looked over his shoulder at Alexander. "You can leave, Mr. Russell. However, since Tasia has naively trusted you, I advise you not to speak of this. If word gets out, it must beโฆ" A soft cough interrupted himโalmost imperceptible unless one was close. Anastasia, however, reacted instantly, staring at Cameron's face. "D-Did my father just cough?" she asked cautiously.
"I guess?" Fabian replied uncertainly, still focused on persuading Anastasia. Alexander, however, was certain. "He did!"
The three hurried to the bed, leaning over Cameron. He remained motionless, seemingly unaffected by the cough. He appeared calm, though his breathing remained labored.
After about thirty seconds, Fabian grew impatient. "I think you misheard! Even if he coughed, it could be a reflex, or he could be getting worse. Let's not delay. I'll find a trustworthy doctor. Tasia, youโ" As Fabian gestured, Cameron erupted in a violent cough.
