Chapter 1642

Although the nurses were skeptical of Lily's methods, they weren't certain enough to dismiss her entirely. The virus's erratic behavior was a known fact; despite extensive study, the staff remained baffled by its complexities. Initially, the doctors believed their collective expertise would quickly unravel the virus's mysteries. However, each new discovery only deepened the unprecedented challenge. Still, elite researchers worldwide collaborated to find a solution.

"Dr. Russell," a voice pleaded, "please don't make this harder. Can we hold you accountable for jeopardizing the patient's life by refusing to allow treatment?" The other doctor clearly distrusted Lily. "I acknowledge the value of traditional herbs," he conceded, "but relying on them now is simply too slow."

He moved forward, but Lily blocked him. Just as he raised his hand to push her aside, a shout stopped him: "Stop!" Dr. Blanc, having heard the news, arrived urgently. He surveyed the room, his voice sharp. "What is going on? Don't you understand the urgency? Why are you arguing?" His gaze settled on Lily.

The doctor who had been arguing with Lily immediately stepped forward. "Dr. Blanc, the virus is changing; the patient needs an immediate infusion. Dr. Russell has been obstructing treatment. I suspect ulterior motives."

Instead of defending herself, Lily quietly tucked the child into the blanket and felt the child's slightly warm forehead. The symptoms mirrored those Alexander had experienced. But unlike then, when panic had fueled her rash decisions, she remained calm. She recalled Alexander's treatmentโ€”IV drips and modern medicineโ€”which, despite initial control, had led to a debilitating cycle of fever and drowsiness.

Later, reflecting on her actions, Lily meticulously monitored Alexander's pulse. While it strengthened initially, it then plummeted, almost disappearing before recovering. Initially, she was perplexed. After studying ancient medical texts, she realized the virus was testing them. Antibiotics and medication created an environment conducive to the virus's rapid evolution and increased virulence. Treating symptoms without infusions or medication was the better approach. Alexander, a strong adult, had nearly succumbed; a frail child was even more vulnerable.

The staff couldn't decipher Lily's reasoning, nor did she explain. Seeing her calmly tending the child, they instinctively moved to restrain her. But before anyone could touch her, Dr. Blanc intervened. "What are you doing?!" he demanded, addressing the angry doctor. "Dr. Morris!"

The doctor exploded. "I don't understand why we're letting these fame-seeking traditionalists dictate treatment. Has she done anything but boil strange herbs and take pulses since she arrived? How can you still defend her now?!"

The ECG monitor behind him emitted a sharp, insistent beep.
