Chapter 1634

Lily choked back a sob. She wasn't weak, but the incident had left her feeling terrible. Thinking of Debbie, whom she considered her daughter, fueled an immediate desire for a cure and a violent retribution against whoever created the virus. "Technology is so advanced now, and humans have created countless inventions to improve our lives. We shouldn't be causing deaths and turning the world into hell just to satisfy the ambitions of a few."

Alexander gently took her gloved hand. "Then let her stay upstairs."

Lily frowned, puzzled. "You want to switch rooms with her?"

Alexander chuckled. "There's more than one VIP room upstairs, and they're all empty. Why can't they allocate another? If more money is needed, we'll pay. If social status is required..." He paused, then spoke softly, "Then she's our daughter. That should suffice, wouldn't you agree?"

"Daughter?"

He nodded. "Didn't you say her mother is deceased, and no one cares for her? We'll be her parents. When she recovers, and the pandemic ends, we'll adopt her. If that's too much, we can become her godparents."

Lily was surprised. "You're willing to do all that?"

"Why not? We don't have a daughter yet, and we're unsure if the twins are girls. Even if they are, she'd be a wonderful older sister for them." He gazed gently at her stomach. Though the hazmat suit concealed the bulge, he knew two lives were growing within. His gaze softened, tinged with worry. "Can you handle working here?"

"I'll be fine," Lily replied, caressing her tummy. "There's a room for me to rest. I'm only responsible for taking patients' pulses, prescribing herbal medicine, and conducting experiments. Others handle the concoctions and data recording, so I'm well cared for."

After a pause, she asked hesitantly, "Aren't you going to ask what this place is?" She wondered if his lack of curiosity since meeting Dr. Blanc was unusual.

Alexander asked instead, "This is where special patients are treated, and Dr. Blanc and the others aren't ordinary doctors. Am I right?"

Lily nodded.

"This is a federal department, and you can't disclose its identity, correct?"

She nodded again, surprised. "So you do know where we are!"

"No, I don't," he said, shaking his head. "More accurately, I don't know the department's name or function. However, I know a place like this is highly classified. I didn't ask because I know you can't tell me."

Lily was astonished. He truly is smart!
