Chapter 1620
It was a simple question, but it seemed too difficult for her.
"No, I only had my mommy..."
The little girl's voice was soft yet wrenching. Lily took a deep breath and forced a smile.
"How could you only have your mommy? You have me, and the doctors and nurses here all care about you very much."
A smile returned to Debbie's face. "Okay!" As she nodded, two slow, noticeable streams of blood ran from her nose to her upper lip. Shocked, Lily grabbed a tissue to wipe them away. The girl showed no discomfort, staring at the blood with wide eyes.
"Debbie, your nose is bleeding!" Lily exclaimed, placing one hand on the girl's forehead while wiping the blood with the other. The blood quickly soaked the tissue. She grabbed another, but the bleeding continued. Again and again.
Lily pressed the nurse call button. The medical staff arrived, shocked by the sight. They quickly gathered equipment, antiseptic wipes, and gauze. After a flurry of activity, they stopped the nosebleed, but Debbie slipped into a light coma.
Lily felt helpless. She checked Debbie's pulse repeatedly; it was weak and unstable, a sign of failing vitality. Watching the nurses connect Debbie to the advanced equipment, Lily stepped back, a crushing weight settling on her chest. She could barely breathe.
She's just a little girl! she thought. This virus is a monstrous abomination. Child or adult, no one can fight it. If we don't hurry, will Debbie survive? She's such a good, pitiful little girl.
Lily couldn't bear to see her suffer further. She returned to the laboratory. Dr. Blanc saw her grim determination and stopped her at the entrance.
"I told you to rest!"
"I'm rested!" Lily insisted.
"You only rested for a few hours," Dr. Blanc said, glancing at the clock and frowning. "You're disobeying my orders!"
"I'm trying to dedicate as much time as possible! A few hours is nothing; patients could suffer greatly, even die, in that same time!" Lily's voice cracked with emotion. "The more time we dedicate, the less they suffer, the more hope they have!"
"Everyone here feels the same," Dr. Blanc said, his voice softening slightly. "Do you think you're the only one who cares, the only one working hard? There are others researching vaccines. We're using a two-pronged approach to defeat this virus!"
