Chapter 1614
"You knew Lily was sensitive and knowledgeable about drugs, yet you tried to spike her tea. Did you do it to tip her off, so she'd switch her tea with yours? Did you let her go on purpose?" He took a few slow steps forward, then climbed onto the stool. Standing atop it, he stared into Mike's eyes with a judging gaze.
"I thought she wouldn't discover the drug and would overlook it. I hadn't thought it through," Mike replied calmly, showing no alarm. His boss stared at him for what felt like an eternity, then burst into laughter.
"Why? Aren't you going to open the box and see what's inside? It's for you alone!"
Dread filled Mike as he heard those words. He lifted the box and opened it abruptly, revealing a small, severed finger. The blood was dried, and its size and shape indicated it didn't belong to an adult.
An explosion seemed to occur in his head. Instantly, Mike grabbed the man's collar and held him aloft.
"You promised me you wouldn't touch him!" he roared, his eyes bloodshot, his rage threatening to consume him.
Despite Mike's fury and obvious strength, the man remained undaunted, letting out an arrogant laugh. "Mike, you're afraid now, aren't you? I warned you not to torment me with your tricks! Every time you try to be clever, your son will pay the price!" he cackled. "How dare you harm my son! I'll kill you!"
Mike lifted him higher, his gaze turning savage. The man, gasping for breath, slowly said, "Look carefully again. Does it belong to your son?"
Startled, Mike examined the box. The finger was small, clearly not from an adult. However, upon closer inspection, he realized it wasn't Nick's either. His son's finger was thinner, and his complexion lighter.
Relieved, he sighed, loosened his grip, and slowly lowered the man.
"Mike, this is just a minor warning!" Flopping back into his chair, the man smoothed his clothes and said coldly, "I'm warning you for the last time. Do your job well. I don't want to see you playing your tricks again! If not, I guarantee it'll be your son's finger next time!"
"You..." Fear filled Mike's eyes as he looked up sharply. He didn't fear death or financial ruin; his greatest fear was harm to his son. "I haven't given my son enough care, haven't spent enough time with him over the years, yet I let him face such danger. If I could, I'd die for him!"
His voice grew grim, the light in his eyes fading.
