Chapter 1612

Just thinking about it made Lily clench her teeth, a surge of rage prompting her to want to kill whoever created the disease.

"It was an unusual case," Dr. Blanc sighed sadly. No one could remain cheerful witnessing a young child endure such suffering.

"Unusual? Unusual?! We have patients in their sixties and seventies here! The girl's mother was at most thirty! How could she die?" Lily realized she'd momentarily lost her composure. The child's account of her mother's death felt like a physical blow, choking her breath.

"Her mother had cancer," Dr. Morris stated flatly.

Lily stared, momentarily dazed.

"Late-stage cancer. The virus infection rapidly worsened her condition, leading to her death within two daysโ€”she was already frail."

Dr. Blanc sighed, continuing, "The child, having cared for her mother, contracted the virus. However, her symptoms are relatively mildโ€”a cold and feverโ€”and she's receiving treatment. If we can generate the antibodies, it would be incredible news for our patients, and even those currently healthy." He turned to Lily. "That's the meaning of our work here."

"He's right. That's why it's meaningful," Lily thought. She'd considered leaving the research institute many times, questioning its direction and the experiments' true intentions. Whether conventional or herbal medicine, research should benefit humanity, cure, not harm.

"I know," she nodded. "Are there any utensils for brewing herbal medicine? If notโ€”"

"There are," Dr. Blanc interrupted. "Moe, take Mrs. Russell to the herbal medicine department."

Lily had been about to offer to bring her own supplies, but the institute appeared well-equipped.

"Dr. Blanc..." Dr. Morris frowned hesitantly. He'd seen Lily take pulses, but he wasn't entirely confident in her herbal medicine skills. He doubted a young, pregnant woman possessed the necessary experience to produce results.

Dr. Blanc understood his colleague's reservations. He looked at Lily patiently. "Mrs. Russell, I worry you'll be overwhelmed by the workload. We have many patients. While a professional medical team cares for them, we need to be present for emergencies, making adjustments based on changing conditions and test results. Youโ€ฆ"

"I can do it!" Lily declared, her gaze unwavering. "I've handled significant workloads before, and my unborn children aren't fragile. I've already explained; my work isn't just for these patients, but for my family too."

Dr. Blanc met her gaze, silent for a moment. Then, a hopeful expression replaced his earlier concern. "Okay, then. Be cautious and avoid overexertion!"
