Chapter 1605
"I know I can't overpower you, and I know how skilled you are," Mike sighed, glancing at Lily. "But I also know they'll eliminate me if I can't convince you, so... I'm sorry."
Lily frowned. "Did you poison my tea?"
"Don't worry. It's a light dose. It won't affect your unborn child. We just need to..." Mike, who had just stood, swayed, his vision blurring. "You..."
Lily pointed to the debris on the floor and smiled. "Have you forgotten why your boss wants to hire me? I'm an expert in this field." She'd known something was amiss when she touched the cup and smelled the tea; she knew what Mike had added. He was telling the truth; the drug wouldn't harm her child, only put her to sleep. She'd quietly switched their cups without his noticing. "You..."
Mike tried to steady himself, but the drug's effects quickly overwhelmed him. Soon, he could barely see. "Don't blame me. I'm just giving you a taste of your own medicine. I know you have difficulties, but so do I. Don't worry, I promise I'll help save your son."
Lily watched as Mike slumped across the table, his eyelids fluttering closed. Patting his shoulder, she left the booth, saying, "My friend had a little too much to drink. Let him sleep here for a while. I'll pay the bill. Reserve this booth for the afternoon."
Lily arrived at the X Department later than scheduled, having spent too much time with Mike. She hadn't anticipated his son's kidnapping; no wonder he'd been so persistent about joining the laboratory project. Some questions remained unanswered, but she could ponder them later.
Dr. Morris, the man from Dominic's place, frowned unhappily. "You're late."
"Sorry. Something came up," Lily admitted, not liking delays herself.
Dr. Morris remained displeased. He frowned, his gaze falling on her belly. "Are you pregnant? You look like you're in your second trimester."
"I'm four months pregnant with twins," she replied calmly. "Where do I get my protective suit?" He'd last seen her in one; he didn't know she was pregnant.
'This is horrible,' he thought. The work was hard and dangerous. He couldn't gauge Lily's capabilities, given Dominic's recommendation, only hoping she wouldn't hinder their progress.
"This is the key to your locker. The lab procedure is on the wall; memorize it. Always disinfect properly. An infection will bring everyone down," he said stiffly, his unhappiness evident.
Lily simply nodded. "Okay."
