Chapter 1588

Lily's apprehension eased slightly based on their initial statements; it seemed they were unaware of Alexander's situation. She offered a conciliatory smile and explained, "I'm sorry, I haven't encountered the pandemic disease and lack significant knowledge. Mainstream medical professionals have conducted far more extensive research; I doubt I can be of much assistance."

Dr. Morris cut to the chase. "That's not the case. While we're physicians, we don't dismiss herbal medicine. We're here to seek collaboration. Ideally, Mr. Fike's involvement would be best." He glanced at Dominic, his skepticism evident.

Dominic offered to introduce his former apprentice, claiming her skills rivaled his own. Their high expectations upon meeting Lily, a young woman, were quickly dashed. Dr. Morris's thoughts were clear: "It takes years of experience to master herbal medicine. How proficient can such a young woman be? Mr. Fike shouldn't have recommended his apprentice merely to create an opportunity for her. This is a serious situation!" Turning to Dominic, he stated, "Mr. Fike, your apprentice also feels unqualified. Perhaps you..."

"Me?" Dominic, a recluse, was startled. He frantically waved his hands. "N-No, I'm too old! I rarely leave my estate. I can't help you at all!" He vehemently shook his head. Years of self-imposed seclusion were not easily broken. The thought of post-pandemic social obligations caused a headache; he wouldn't risk it.

Dr. Morris, young and impetuous, bristled at the immediate refusal. "Mr. Fike, this isn't just about you, but our country, the world. This pandemic is unlike anything we've seen. With your experience in herbal medicine, shouldn't you step forward? Great capability demands great responsibility! How can you hide now?" Dr. Blanc gently restrained his colleague, who had become overly emotional. Dominic shrugged, unfazed.

"Step forward? I'm too old! And don't overestimate my abilities or treat me like a pariah for not helping. I've done my part by recommending her, haven't I?" He gestured towards Lily, clearly wanting no further involvement.

Dr. Morris started to speak, but Dr. Blanc again intervened. Finally, he asked, "Do you genuinely know nothing about the pandemic disease?"

"How could I know if I've had no contact with it?" Lily smiled unconcernedly, determined to conceal Alexander's fate.

However, Dr. Blanc's keen eyes, visible despite his face shield, seemed to pierce her pretense. Though Lily couldn't see his expression through the hazmat suit, she sensed his knowing, sly smile.

"If you know nothing about it, why are you wearing a hazmat suit?" Dr. Blanc asked flatly. The seemingly simple question laid bare her deception.
