Chapter 1504
The following morning, Maria freshened up, ate breakfast, and applied her makeup. She was about to leave for a shopping trip with friendsโa much-needed outing after a busy period tending to Anastasia's affairs. The prospect of this had beckoned for a long time, and they had finally arranged to meet.
โIโm going to have such a good time today!โ With that thought, she grabbed her bag and headed for the door.
Just as she was leaving, she heard hurried footsteps. Someone quickly entered the house. Joy flooded Mariaโs face as she recognized the newcomer.
โRee! Youโre back!โ
โYeah,โ Rhea replied, immediately ascending the stairs.
โRee, youโre not returning to the institute, are you? Will you be staying home longer this time?โ Maria asked, already accustomed to Rheaโs abruptness. She followed her daughter upstairs. Rhea didnโt respond, continuing her quick ascent.
โI saw the news. Something happened to a professor at your institute, right? Will you continue the experiment, or will it stop? You should use this chance to rest. Look at youโyouโve lost weight again!โ Maria continued, unfazed by Rheaโs silence.
Reaching Rheaโs room, Rhea rushed to her desk. Her expression changed as her gaze swept across the surface.
โWhereโs my pen holder?โ
โWhat was that?โ Maria blinked, confused.
โMy pen holder! The one I put on my desk!โ Rhea roared, slapping the desk. Her expression was terrifying.
Maria was startled by her daughterโs outburst. โI-I donโt know,โ she stammered.
โHow could you not know?โ Rhea slammed her palm on the desk again, her frustration evident. She searched franticallyโthe table, cabinets, drawers, even the bookshelvesโher room quickly becoming a mess.
โI placed it here! How could it be missing? Did you come into my room when I wasnโt around? Did you touch my things?โ Rheaโs voice rose to a shriek.
Maria was frightened. Sheโd never seen this side of Rhea. While Rhea had always been aloof and distant, sheโd never displayed such raw rage.
โN-No! I didnโt! Since you told me not to, I wouldnโt dare touch your things,โ Maria replied. After a pause, she added softly, โI have no idea what pen holder youโre talking about. Tell me about it. Is it expensive? Iโll buy you one even more expensive. Cheer up, Ree!โ
โBuy?!โ Rhea, still unable to locate the pen holder, looked up and sneered. โDo you think you can buy everything in this world with your stupid money?โ
Mariaโs eyes filled with tears. โRee, I know youโre upset and think Iโm biased, but Iโve explained it to you many times. Itโs not what you think. You hate how your father and I prioritize money, but youโve benefited from it! Without our โstupid money,โ could you have studied abroad? Could you have found such a good job? Could you be living so comfortably?โ
Rhea scoffed. โWhat? Are you trying to say Iโm indebted to you, and Iโve spent too much of your money? Fine! Letโs settle the accounts, and Iโll pay you back in full! You guys have that fat daughter anyway. You donโt need me!โ
Maria was stunned by her daughterโs words.
