Chapter 1490
Austin panicked, but forced himself to remain calm. "Why would I wait for him? Isn't he one of you?"
Rhea nodded. "So you're not waiting for him? That's good. Oh, yes, you're unaware of recent events. Something happened to Professor Thompson today. I don't suppose you'll be seeing him again."
"What happened?" Austin asked, despite his apprehension.
"He was in an accident. The doctor couldn't save him. What a pity," she sighed, her voice devoid of genuine regret.
Austin's pupils dilated in shock. "You guys killed him?"
"Tsk, tsk, tsk..." Rhea clicked her tongue and waved dismissively. "How could you say that? Professor Thompson was involved in a traffic accident! A large truck crashed into his car. How dare you accuse us of murder? We're law-abiding citizens! We wouldn't dream of murdering anyone."
"Law-abiding citizens?" Austin snorted. "Would law-abiding citizens brandish guns and commit false imprisonment? Rhea Moore, I never thought a woman could be so cold-blooded and vile! Professor Thompson was your senior, and he treated you well. He wanted to stop the experiment, change its direction, but he dared not act after your threats. He didn't even dare go to the police! How could you kill him? Are you even human?"
He recalled Thompson's kindness after he joined the laboratory, remembering that he would have died days ago without the man's food and water. But now he's dead. What about me? Am I next? Has Rhea come to kill me? Fear gripped him. These people are truly ruthless! What horrific things are they creating with this experiment?
"I told you it was an accident! As for you..." Rhea looked down at him. "You're injured, and we want you to rest here and recuperate. You treated the institute as your home and rarely left, didn't you? How can you call this false imprisonment?"
"Bullshit!" Austin refused to argue further. "What do you want? Kill me? Do it quickly, then!" He offered his neck, bracing for death.
Rhea smiled. "So eager to die, huh? Didn't I tell you we're law-abiding citizens? We don't kill anyone. However, we can easily say you killed him!"
"Me?"
"Yes, you!" Rhea nodded thoughtfully. "If he hadn't tried to warn Lily for your sake, he wouldn't have been there, wouldn't have had that accident. So, who else killed him but you?"
Austin was speechless, momentarily believing her, almost convinced of his own culpability.
"Not only did you kill Professor Thompson, you're going to get someone else killed!" Rhea grabbed his collar, yanking him to his feet. "I'm bringing you to see how many people will die because of a jinx like you!"
