Chapter 1435

Although Fabian always presented a cheerful demeanor, he knew Cameron only paid him any attention because of his deceased sister. Fabian would occasionally mention his sister, and only then would Cameron's gloom lift. If Cameron had moved on, his sister's memory would have faded completely. What benefit would that offer Fabian?

"I'm just echoing your thoughts," Maria said, feeling wronged. "You're a man; you should understand men better than I do. No matter how affectionate a man is, after years..." she trailed off. She was merely stating the truth.

Before his anger overwhelmed him, Fabian reined himself in. He realized his wife was right. He was a man, after all. He considered Cameron's years of mourning excessive. If it were Fabian, he would have sought other companionship long ago.

His gaze drifted to his wife; she perceived his unspoken thoughts.

"What is it? Are you planning to replace me already?" Maria retorted, eyebrows raised.

"Of course not! I'm just thinking about what you said!" he quickly replied.

"Don't point fingers at me," she said. "Look at yourself! Look how much you've praised Cameron. I'm sure you'd choose him if you were gone, wouldn't you?"

"Of course, I would!" she declared frankly. "He's more capable, handsome, and has higher status than you, butโ€ฆ" Just as Fabian was about to lose his temper, Maria shifted her tone. "He looks down on me. I have my pride!"

Fabian was speechless. Her words, though unpleasant, were true.

"You're lucky you have your pride," he snorted.

They sulked in silence for a moment before Maria spoke again. "You're wrong, too. I know you're stressed about work, but why take it out on Ree? She hasn't been home in ages. It's rare for her to visit, and now you've driven her away again."

"I'm her father! Are you suggesting I let her walk all over me?!" he raised his voice. "That's ridiculous! A child shouldn't disrespect me like that."

"This is your fault! Look at the girl she's become. She spends all day in some research lab. The other day, Mr. Blanc asked if I wanted to arrange a meeting between her and his son. I hadn't even mentioned it, and she's already left."

"Which Mr. Blanc?" Maria's interest was piqued.

"It doesn't matter which Mr. Blanc. Can you even decide things for your daughter?" Fabian replied mockingly. She fell silent. He was right.
