Chapter 1422
Dominic hadn't interfered with outside matters for a long time, and Lily didn't want to involve him. Living as a carefree recluse suited him; he deserved to enjoy his old age. Therefore, Lily said nothing and left with Galen, quickly returning home with their gathered herbs.
Everything appeared normal, but her mind was unsettled. She'd always believed their home was secure, with its sophisticated surveillance and safety systems, and meticulously vetted housekeepers. Yet, even a palace offered no absolute guarantee of safety, let alone an ordinary house.
"Galen, you're back!" Daisy, the nanny, greeted them warmly. Dressed in comfortable loungewear, her hair neatly bunned, she looked pleasant. Barely over thirty, she appeared much younger, her skin remarkably well-maintained. Despite a clean background check, Galen's earlier incident left Lily uneasy.
"Dee-Dee!" Unsure of his mother's distress, Galen rushed forward, arms outstretched. Lily had considered warning him not to mention the day's events to Daisy, but children his age inevitably revealed such things. It seemed best to say nothing and treat the situation as unremarkable.
Daisy lifted Galen, smiling happily. "Are you tired from your outing with Mommy? Want a bath, some milk, and a nap?"
"Yes!" Galen replied eagerly.
Daisy smiled at Lily. "Ma'am, I'll take Galen to his room. Has he eaten? Should I prepare something?"
"No, he's full," Lily replied flatly, detecting nothing unusual in Daisy's expression.
"Okay!" Daisy ascended the stairs with Galen.
Watching them, Lily noted Daisy's light, quick stepsโthe efficiency of a meticulous person. Lily had chosen her for precisely this reason, and because Galen adored her.
However... Rubbing her temples, she summoned the butler, requesting the past two months' CCTV footage. She offered no explanation beyond wanting to see Galen's activities while away from home.
The butler departed. She avoided further questions, fearing it might arouse Daisy's suspicion. Her lock-picking skill suggested a complex background, yet her long tenure with Galen implied she wouldn't harm him if truly malicious. Besides, apart from the incident, Daisyโs behavior hadn't been overtly strange.
Still, Lilyโs unease persisted. She decided to review the surveillance footage before deciding on Daisyโs future as Galen's nanny. The stronger her desire to see Alexander in Burnwken, the more pressing her concerns became, fueling her stress. Alexander's presence would have offered comfort and reassurance.
Lily barely slept that night. Reviewing nearly three months of footage, she found nothing amiss in Daisy's behavior. The woman patiently cared for Galenโfeeding him, playing with him, telling stories, even letting him pretend to ride a horse on her back. Her dedication was undeniable.
