Chapter 1386
"Yes, why?" Mike inquired innocently, spreading his arms.
Lily was speechless. Balling her hands into fists, she curled her lips. "As you said, you're a businessman, and you only care about profit. I can't answer this question, and you should consider why La Beautรฉ Group withdrew from the project. Do you truly want to be involved?"
Looking at her, Mike smiled enigmatically. His gaze was unfathomable; his smile, a mere faรงade. It was impossible to discern his thoughts. Lily had no idea why he was acting this way, but it was clear he either couldn't or wouldn't tell her.
"Since you've come from upstairs, can you tell me if Professor Thomson is there?" she asked, changing the subject and pointing upward to the restricted area.
He followed her gaze and nodded. "He should be coming down soon. He still has something to attend to."
"Besides Professor Thomson and you, was there someone else involved?" she asked after a moment's reflection.
Taken aback, Mike laughed suddenly. "La Beautรฉ Group used to be the biggest shareholder. Don't you know who else is involved?"
"They always dealt with Professor Thomson," Lily explained. "At first, I thought the project was his idea, but I later learned he was only a figurehead."
"How did you know that?" Mike asked curiously.
Lily looked at him. "In other words, there's someone behind him."
Mike replied after a two-second pause, then started laughing. "You're feeling me out, aren't you? If you say there's someone behind him, then maybe you're right. No matter what, we have the same goal: to complete the experiment and make it work."
"I've learned about the project from the start, and I know you've poured a lot of effort into it," she said. "It must be tough rushing around while pregnant. If it succeeds sooner, you could rest and prepare for your labor, and Alex could also relax."
He paused, a thought occurring to him. "Yes, I heard he went to Burnwken lately. Is he back yet? I heard the situation there was messyโwars and, apparently, a pandemic."
"Pandemic?" Lily was unaware of this. She'd followed the news, knowing of the chaos and war, hoping for Alex's return, but a pandemic was news to her.
"You didn't know about it?" Mike paused, perhaps worried about alarming her. "However, based on what I know, the area the company was in was relatively safe. Don't worry too much."
"Okay," Lily replied, turning to leave.
"Hey, where are you going?" Mike, surprised by her sudden departure, called after her. "Even if you fly over there, there's nothing you can do. It's safer to stay within the country."
Lily stopped, turned, and said, "Who says I'm going overseas?"
"Then you..."
"I'm going to the lab."
