Chapter 1365
The woman ignored his anger, a slight curve playing at the corners of her lips. "I don't know you, but we will, once we talk."
Austin was speechless. The world has changed! When did women become so bold and brazen? He recalled Lily, perpetually condemning him. Now this woman, also from the research instituteโฆ Are all the women from this institute insane? Remembering Thompson's mention of her other project, he tempered his irritation.
"All right, but this isn't a suitable place. Let's go somewhere else," he said, glancing around. "There's a nearbyโ"
"Here is fine," she interrupted. "Let's talk here."
"Here?" He looked around. They were near the laboratory building; it was almost time for work, and people would soon be arriving.
When he turned, she was leaning against his car, watching him. "Yes, here! Broad daylight, open space. We can leave quickly and not waste anyone's time."
Austin remained silent. This woman is incredibly direct! He had no choice but to comply. "Okay, what do you want to discuss?"
"Are you Mr. Dominic's secret apprentice?" she asked bluntly.
He replied with a smile. "What if I said I'm not?"
"So, you're an imposter, then?"
Austin erupted in laughter. "Just because I deny being his apprentice, how does that make me an imposter? Miss, are you mistaken?"
"If you're not his secret apprentice, why would people say you are?" Her words were sharp, precise.
No one had ever dared to question him before. They'd accepted the rumor without verification. Of course, they wouldn't risk insulting him by asking.
Austin shrugged, affecting an innocent expression. "How would I know? If they think I am, so be it. If you don't believe them, that's your prerogative."
After years of navigating such situations, he skillfully deflected the question, employing ambiguity to his advantage. He denied it while simultaneously creating the impression of humble self-deprecation. Though unstated, the implication was clear.
This artful communication was a carefully honed skill.
The woman seemed convinced. She rested her chin on her hand, her gaze lowered, seemingly pondering his words.
Austin observed her. "Are you done?"
She raised her head, silent. "If you're done, is it my turn to ask questions?" He stepped closer. "So, who are you?"
