Chapter 1315
Maria stood stunned, unable to comprehend Austin's words. He didn't care about her pleas; his assistance was sought by many influential people who believed him to be Dominic's secret apprentice, a title he neither confirmed nor denied. While confident in his skills, he acknowledged the inherent risks. A mistake could offend powerful individuals, a risk he deemed too great. Furthermore, the growing number of requests threatened his mystique, potentially diminishing his value.
"Mr. Fike, I have no ill intentions," Maria insisted, following him. "Didn't you study medicine to save lives? My niece, barely twenty, has consulted numerous doctors, all to no avail. If you could save her, you'd gain worldwide renown!"
Austin quickened his pace toward the parking lot, showing no interest in her persistence. Seeing him leave, Maria panicked, stamping her foot. "If you're truly a miracle doctor, his secret apprentice, why won't you help? You're just a conman, aren't you?"
This echoed Fabian's earlier doubt, a doubt Maria had previously dismissed. But after two days of fruitless waiting, a humiliating fall, and Austin's harsh words, her frustration boiled over.
Her outburst halted Austin's departure. He turned, his gaze severe. His seeming hostility had led Maria to believe he was unapproachable. His stare made her uneasy; she swallowed nervously. โSht! Did I offend him? I'm so dead! He'll be even more unwilling to help now!โ*
"Who did you call a conman?" His voice was frigid. He resented the implication; he deserved recognition for his skills, even if Dominic hadn't formally acknowledged him as his apprentice. He wasn't a conman; he simply hadn't clarified the misunderstanding.
"IโI was babbling," Maria stammered. "Please forgive me. I'm only doing this for my family. I hope youโฆ" She trailed off, unsure how to proceed. He seemed like a gentleman, yet communication proved difficult.
Austin considered her earlier words about Secretary Rollins' daughter and her incurable illness. His own research had stalled. A change of focus might prove fruitful. โPlus, I can always say I went to help people with their illnesses if things are not moving well here at the lab.โ
His demeanor softened. "You mentioned your niece's condition. What is it?"
Hope rekindled in Maria's eyes. "Mr. Fike, it's like thisโฆ"
