Chapter 1306
Lily looked around as she exited the car. It wasn't far from her expectations. Given Cameron's identity, extravagant living wasn't advisable. He resided in a modest, elegant two-story bungalow.
After entering, a maid served Lily tea and desserts. "Ms. Rollins will be down soon," she announced.
Lily nodded; the maid departed. The house was spacious, the sparse furnishings accentuating its size. She could easily see the entire living room at a glance. Few luxurious items were present, confirming Alexander's description of Cameron as a meticulous man. A few bonsai trees in simple pots provided the only significant decoration.
While exploring, Lily heard slow, heavy footsteps descending the stairs. Anastasia appeared a moment later.
Supporting herself on the banister, Anastasia descended slowly, coughing occasionally. Despite her current state, she retained an air of refined elegance.
"I apologize for the wait, Mrs. Russell," Anastasia said softly, a stark contrast to her earlier aggressive demeanor in the cafe. Her gaze was lowered, her manner gentler.
"I just arrived," Lily replied respectfully. "I'm sorry to intrude. Did I disturb your rest?"
Anastasia waved a hand dismissively. "Not at all. I have little to do these days. I mostly just eat and sleep."
Her weariness and unhappiness were evident. Lily understood Anastasia's ostentatious facade as a protective mechanism, a way to avoid unwanted attention and gossip.
Lily broached the purpose of her visit. "I adore the agarwood you gave me; it must have been very costly."
While she had previously given Anastasia a dress due to a misunderstanding, that paled in comparison to the agarwood's value. Lily had been genuinely surprised by such an expensive gift, not just by its price, but by Anastasia's thoughtful choice, reflecting Lily's own love for the fragrant wood.
"Oh, is that so?" Anastasia raised an eyebrow, feigning ignorance. "I don't know much about such things. A friend gave it to me; I don't know how to care for them. I heard you love plants and have many at home, so I thought you might appreciate it. I'm glad you like it!"
"Of course I do!" Anastasia's unawareness of the agarwood's value didn't diminish Lily's sincere gratitude.
Lily mused, The agarwood is precious and costly. Won't you regret giving it to me so readily?
"Why would I? No matter how precious it is, it's wasted on someone who doesn't appreciate it. It's far more valuable in your hands. Since you like it, giving it to you was worthwhile!" Anastasia gestured casually as she reclined on the couch. Looking at Lily, she added, "You don't mind me talking to you like this, do you?"
