Chapter 1261

"What in the world are they up to?" The older man's voice was laced with apprehension and anger. He'd seen his share of trouble in his long life, but the research institute's activities shocked him to his core.

"I don't know their plans," she replied, "but it's certainly not the benevolent pursuit of improved herbal medicine we initially believed." She paused, sipping her tea, a mellow brew made from high-quality leavesโ€”a gift of nature, like the herbs themselves. He appreciated the simple pleasure, mindful of the wisdom of his ancestors who, thousands of years ago, understood the dual nature of herbs: their potential to heal and harm. Medicinal herbs could save lives, but misuse could be fatal. Lily, ever cautious with such potent remedies, had never suspected such malevolence. "Sometimes," she mused, "humanity is more toxic than any poison."

Unsettled, the old man rubbed his fingers together. "Are you certain you haven't made a mistake?" he asked. Dismissing the doubt almost immediately, he continued, "No, no, you've been my student for years. You wouldn't make such a blunder. They're up to no good. Do you know the purpose of their experiment?" His concern stemmed from his own involvement. He'd been consulted years ago by the research institute's senior members, through a mutual acquaintance. They'd hinted at their plans, inquiring about feasibility. He'd deemed it plausible, and they'd sought someone to execute the project. Because of its perfumery aspect, he'd indirectly recommended Lily, his cherishedโ€”and lastโ€”student.

His connection to Lily began many years ago when, while collecting medicinal herbs, he met Wilfred Lodge, a man who saved his life. He spent months recuperating at Lodge's home, forging a deep friendship. There, he met young Lily, a gifted botanist. Heโ€™d playfully taken her on as a student, sharing his knowledge. Though their contact lessened as he retreated from the world, Lily later sought him out in Kingsland. He'd been astounded by her talent, her knowledge exceeding his own, honed likely through years working as a perfumer.

Now, with his student entangled in this dubious project, he couldn't remain uninvolved.

"I have no idea. They're secretive, and my attempts to uncover their intentions failed," Lily said. "But I sense nothing good will come of it."

"Then don't participate!" the older man declared. "Their motives are unclear. If it involves harm, you must refuse."
