Listen to this chapter:

Melanie, dressed in a beautiful gown and exquisite makeup, dared not enter the venue alone. MN Inc. was insignificant amongst the industry giants gathered there. She'd hoped Frank's presence would elevate her status, but now, alone, she worried she'd be ignored. The thought of being overlooked at the hotel entrance was unacceptable.

In the car, she repeatedly called Frank, but he refused to answer.

"Ms. Thayer, it's almost time," the driver said, turning.

"Why are you in a hurry when I'm not?" she snapped.

Just as she reached for her phone again, she spotted a Rolls-Royce approaching. After a moment's consideration, she tapped the front seat. "Quickly, drive over there. Follow them, but keep a distance!"

Melanie's car was opposite the hotel. The driver maneuvered the car up the ramp, pulling alongside the hotel entrance just as Lily exited her own car. Lily, in a chic black off-the-shoulder gown, her hair loosely tied, looked elegant. The dress flattered her shoulders and neck.

Clenching her fists, Melanie hurried toward Lily in her high heels. "Lily!"

Photographers, snapping pictures of Lily and Jenny on the red carpet, turned at the sound of her voice. Melanie, in a short crimson dress that showcased her legs, complemented by three-inch heels, was clearly meticulously dressed.

Lily, despite the surrounding press, remained still as Melanie approached.

"Lily, you're here! What a coincidence! You've clearly done great work for Rebirth. No wonder they're treating you so well. At least you didn't waste your efforts job-hopping!" Melanie said pointedly.

Lily inwardly sneered. She knew Melanie's intentions were malicious, but this was a low blow; Melanie was still harping on the past. Did she think she could still use Lily as a stepping stone?

With a slight nod, Lily retorted, "Indeed, Rebirth treats me well. It's a company with excellent prospects and vision. You seem to misunderstand job-hopping, Ms. Thayer. I never signed a contract with any other company."

"Oh, right!" Before Melanie could respond, Lily continued, "You mean the favors I did for MN Inc.? That's a small matter. We've been classmates for years. I can't be so calculating over a few bottles of essential oils and perfumes, can I?"

Turning to Jenny, she said, "Jenny, the air is stuffy. Let's go inside."

Jenny, nodding, cast a disdainful glance at Melanie as she passed.

Melanie, intending to discredit Lily to the press, was instead outmaneuvered.
