Chapter 1129
Moments later, the housekeepers finished counting the votes. Interestingly, the results were close, but ultimately, slightly more votes favored the outsider's departure than maintaining the status quo.
Some family members were dissatisfied with Alexander's leadership; satisfying everyone is, after all, a difficult task. These disgruntled members used the vote to express their dissent.
The margin was only two votes. Ralph revealed a smug expression upon seeing the results. "So, most of our family members have agreed to honor our family's tradition that the Russell family's pure bloodline is paramount. Those who are not part of the Russell family should not remain and enjoy the privileges associated with being a Russell." He raised the ballot papers victoriously. Ralph was on the verge of achieving his lifelong ambition. He imagined Alexander kneeling and weeping before him, unable to accept reality. The thought of the once powerful Alexander bowing to him elicited a chuckle.
Alexander, however, remained silent at the side.
"Now that the results are in, may we know who this person is?" someone from the crowd impatiently asked.
Ralph smiled, fixed his gaze on Alexander, and lifted his index finger. "That person isโ"
"Wait!" Margaret shouted, entering the hall with Celine's assistance. Her hurried gait, hampered by age, threatened to cause her to stumble. Seeing his mother, Ralph rushed to her aid. "Take your time, Mother. There's no need to rush. I know you're distressed, but please be careful."
"It seems there's no turning back now that Ralph is so determined," Margaret murmured, taking Ralph's hand. "I agree with Alexander. Bloodline isn't everything. Perhaps there's a reason for this, and since the outsider was raised in the Russell family, he is one of us. Let's leave it at that."
Ralph stared at his mother, wide-eyed and stunned. He hadn't anticipated this eleventh-hour change of heart.
"Mother, how can you say that? A family's bloodline is fundamental! Look at monarchies; they pass down their thrones based on lineage. While we are not a monarchy, we cannot entrust our substantial business and wealth to an outsider. I disagree. We can continue treating him as one of us, but he mustn't hold any authority within the family!"
Preventing his mother from responding, Ralph continued, "Besides, the vote is concluded. This is the family's decision, not solely mine. Even if you disagree, the majority voted against him."
"Youโฆ" Margaret looked at her son with pain etched on her face. She hadn't expected such stubbornness and unforgiveness.
"I know this decision pains you, given your compassion, but we cannot let emotions dictate our actions. We must consider the greater good and what benefits the family most. Please be reasonable," Ralph said, then whispered, "Didn't we already agree to this?"
