Chapter 1072
"Who else would it be? Of course, it's your silly uncle," Margaret said, glancing away. "He took a century to find the ring! Still, he found it. According to him, it was between the sofa cushions, and I didn't even realize I'd dropped it there."
"That's excellent news, and you still have time for your show," Alexander said, consulting his watch. "Tell Uncle Ralph to pick you up." Margaret nodded. "Thank goodness you were here; otherwise, I would have panicked."
Ralph arrived moments later, having gone straight to the cafe. He rushed to their table. "Mom, I found it!" He produced the ring and showed it to Margaret. "This is it, right?"
"Yes, that's it. This ring has never left my side. Losing it would have broken my heart."
She quickly put the ring on. "It's looser than before. No wonder it fell off."
"You've lost weight. Let me take it to a jeweler to have it tightened," Ralph offered.
Margaret shook her head. "No, it's fine. I couldn't face your father if I lost it. I'll keep it safe in my jewelry box."
"Sure, that's a good idea," Ralph agreed, smiling and turning to Alexander. "It's late. I'm leaving with Grandmother for the show. What are your plans?"
"Lily's tired, so we're leaving too," Alexander replied. "You should go first."
"Mom, we need to hurry," Ralph said, rising.
As they were leaving, Alexander called out, "Uncle Ralph."
Ralph stopped, turning back, slightly dazed.
"Since you left in such a hurry, did you leave anything behind?" Alexander asked. "I just don't want to bother the housekeepers."
Ralph laughed, a little forcefully. "Of course not. I'm a guy; I don't wear accessories."
Alexander nodded. "Very well. Have fun and be safe."
Ralph hurried away, feeling nervous under Alexander's scrutinizing gaze. He found Alexander's expression unreadable. Nevertheless, he'd gotten what he wanted; now he just needed to negotiate with Heather. The thought of his impending wealth thrilled him.
As they drove off, Margaret sighed, gazing out the window.
"Mom, why the sigh? I found the ring; you should be happy!" Ralph said excitedly, starting the car.
"I feelโฆinsecure. Something's not right," she admitted. She felt uneasy around Alexander, unable even to lie comfortably.
"You're used to being in his shadow," Ralph said confidently. "Wait until I'm head of the household. He won't dare be arrogant then!"
"Let's hope so," Margaret murmured, leaning against the window, silent.
