Chapter 1069

Ralph ran straight to the first floor. He didn't know which room was Alexander's bedroom, but as he surveyed the corridor, one door was tightly shut. Something was obviously inside.

He approached the bedroom, pausing just before the knob. If this was Alexander's bedroom, and the book was inside, entry wouldn't be easy. Ralph was certain the room would be heavily trapped. Alexander was cautious, his house bristling with state-of-the-art security. He wouldn't leave this room unsecured.

With that in mind, Ralph carefully turned the doorknobโ€”and found the room unlocked. This was highly suspicious.

After a moment's thought, he decided to risk it. He was already here. He produced a small piece of wood from his pocket and gently pushed the door open. Peering inside, he saw a large bed. The layout was unmistakableโ€”the master bedroom!

Excitement surged, but Ralph didn't rush. Ensuring he had sufficient space, he produced expensive, custom-made glasses capable of detecting laser beams.

The moment he donned the glasses, a complex network of overlapping laser beams materialized across the vast bedroom. Ralph smirked, pleased with his preparation. A blind entry would have triggered those beams, resulting in injury, or worseโ€”explaining his presence to Alexander.

Fortunately, he was prepared. He moved slowly and carefully through the laser grid, bending and crawling toward the safe. Several times, he nearly brushed a beam, but managed to recover.

Reaching the safe, he sighed in relief. His back was drenched with sweat. It had been arduous, requiring silent movement and constant vigilance to avoid the laser beams and any potential housekeepers.

Gritting his teeth, he focused on the company shares and the wealth they represented. He crouched, examining the safe: an old-style model with a dial. He needed to get all three digits correct.

He'd seen this type of safe beforeโ€”at the office, and in Alexander's room. During a previous visit, he'd memorized the combination Alexander had used.

Initially, this had been for personal gainโ€”to steal confidential documents. But that memorized combination might now unlock this safe. If the safes were identical, would the combinations match? He'd seen people crack safes using stethoscopes on television, but didn't know how, and lacked one anyway.

As he hesitated, a noise from downstairs jolted him. Nervousness tightened its grip. What if the housekeepers came upstairs? Worse, what if Alexander returned? He couldn't wait.
