Chapter 55

Though Herman could stand and walk, the effects of a previous car accident meant he didn't walk normally. His slow gait wasn't obvious, but a limp became apparent when he walked faster or ran.

After recovering the ability to stand, he eschewed the path his family had planned for him and entered the business world. The Shaw family didn't pressure him, hoping he would live freely. Herman's father still had decades in politics and could continue supporting the family.

Knowing the car Lauren was in belonged to Herman, Dana and the others dared not comment on it. There were many things money couldn't buy.

The round-faced girl, Theresa Hood, was knowledgeable about luxury brands. Her family wasn't as influential as others, but her pleasant personality meant she socialized easily. Though she wouldn't discuss Herman's car, her face fell when she thought of Lauren.

She glanced back at Sally and said maliciously, "Sally, I didn't expect your sister Lauren to be driving Herman's car. What's her relationship with him? His mistress?"

Since her family's rise to wealth, many women had pursued her father, some even offending her mother. Theresa suspected Lauren was Herman's mistress, fueling her dislike.

"You're saying Lauren is Herman's mistress?" Dana, who was driving, exclaimed incredulously. "Did you say she attended a top university?" Dana's family had praised Lauren for this achievement.

"So what? Education doesn't define character," Theresa retorted, glancing down at her manicure. "A prestigious college doesn't make her a great person. I'll admit she's pretty, but she's just a poor student. Why would Herman let her drive his car? There must be something between them."

Lisa interjected, "Herman Shaw isn't married yet."

Theresa and Sally simultaneously exclaimed, "Connected by marriage!"

Theresa's eyes widened. "Lucky girl!" Now that Lauren had returned to the Bennett family, nothing stood in the way of her marriage to Herman. Even Dana admired Lauren's good fortune. The Bennett family would likely approve of the marriage. What a lucky woman!
