Chapter 414
Joyce was sentenced to ten years in prison.
Quentinโs parents came to the Lamberts, crying and blaming them.
Every time the Lamberts confronted Tuff, they accused him of being the reason they lost Dominick.
Now, it was their turn to be blamed by others.
They had nothing to say.
Dominick was gone, but the Lamberts still had Joyce. The Waltons, on the other hand, had lost their only son, Quentin.
And it was Joyce who had started things with him in the first place.
Love โ whether given or received โ had become a shackle, and in the end, it all led to tragedy.
Seeing the Waltonsโ heartbreak filled the Lambert elders with shame.
At last, they quieted down and stopped bothering Tuff.
But Joyce still wouldnโt come to her senses, stirring up trouble even behind bars.
She accused Kayla of being a spy.
This couldโve been swept under the rug. Tuff and Landon had more than enough power to make it disappear.
But then, the Limitless Sect handed over evidence, exposing Kayla as one of their own.
And just like that, Kayla was taken away.
Tuff stomped his foot, furious. โI shouldโve just finished her off when I had the chance!โ
โTuff, how the hell did your wife end up a spy?โ Raymond asked, his gunshot wound almost healed.
โSheโs not!โ Tuff shot back.
โChill, I was just asking. Why are you so pissed?โ Raymond said.
Landon calmly explained how Kayla had been kidnapped as a child. Raymond was stunned. โMan, she survived all that? Guess sheโs got some good fortune coming her way!โ
โYeah, sheโs been taken away. Satisfied?โ Tuff grumbled, barely stopping himself from rolling his eyes at his dad.
Raymond suddenly changed the subject. โDid you hand in your resignation yet?โ
โTurned it in, but they havenโt signed off yet,โ Tuff muttered, sounding even more annoyed.
His master was furious, and Tuff was a bundle of nerves.
Back when Landon tried to hand in his resignation, Tuff had accused him of being petty and narrow-minded. Now, the tables had turned. He was the one getting a taste of his own medicine from his master.
โYour masterโs been training you for years. Itโs normal for him to blow off some steam,โ Raymond said with a grin, pulling out two bottles of his best booze from the cabinet. โIโm heading out. You keep Mr. Kingsley company.โ
โDad!โ Tuff called out, clearly not happy.
Tuff really wasnโt in the mood for drinks right now.
Landon watched Raymond walk out, his back straight, then said thoughtfully, โThis liquorโs pretty good. Letโs have a couple of drinks.โ
Tuff was speechless.
โMaybe a couple drinks will bring us some good news,โ Landon said.
โNot even a little worried about your sister, Landon?โ Tuff asked.
โNot at all. Sheโs just being questioned, not tortured,โ Landon replied.
โButโฆโ Tuff muttered.
โI know Kayla can handle herself,โ Landon said, taking a sip of his drink.
Landon sipped his drink, looking totally relaxed, while Tuff just sat there, sulking.
Suddenly, Landonโs phone rang, and he broke into a grin.
Seeing Landon smile just ticked Tuff off even more. โIs that your wife? Go warm her bed and stop crashing at my place.โ
โItโs Brian,โ Landon replied.
Tuff snatched the phone and demanded, โHow could you not keep an eye on Dally? He went and spilled Kaylaโs whole background to Joyceโฆโ
Landon quickly took the phone back and said politely, โDr. Shawn, heโs just really stressed. He didnโt mean to take it out on you.โ
โI know,โ Brian replied with a smile. โI sent something over by international courier. Keep an eye out for it.โ
โWhat is it?โ Landon asked.
โSomething thatโll set Kayla free,โ Brian said.
โThanks,โ Landon said sincerely.
โDonโt mention it,โ Brian replied.
โIs there anything I can do for you, Dr. Shawn?โ Landon asked.
โJust donโt try to kill Dally,โ Brian said.
โFine,โ Landon agreed.
Even though Dally was a total troublemaker, Landon still agreed.
Dally was all Brian had left, and they just couldnโt bring themselves to hurt good people anymore.
Joyce sat in her cell, eagerly waiting for her new neighbor โ Kayla.
A foreign spy like her was bound to end up in prison.
When Joyce reported Kayla, she even made a special request to have Kayla put right next door.
By now, Kayla must have been found guilty.
Joyce couldnโt help but let out a triumphant laugh as she pictured it all unfolding.
Her cellmate shot her a sideways look. โWhy are you acting crazy?โ
โYou just donโt get it. This is the joy of revenge,โ Joyce said, grinning from ear to ear.
โYouโre nuts!โ her cellmate snapped.
Her cellmate wasnโt wrong. Joyce was clearly losing it.
When Joyce saw Kayla walk in, looking all neat and tidy with Raymond and a bunch of officials at her side, she totally lost it.
โKayla, look at you now! You finally got what you deserve! You spy, you cancer to your own country!โ Joyce cackled.
โWerenโt you acting all high and mighty? Actually telling me you were a spy โ like I wouldnโt turn you in? Please!
โYou got me locked up, so Iโm dragging you down with me. Letโs rot in here together!โ Joyce said.
Joyce was acting like a total lunatic.
Kayla shot her a look of calm disdain.
โKayla, letโs see how you like prison now!โ Joyce cackled, then called out to her cellmates, โSheโs an international spy! When she moves in, letโs all jump her together!โ
The other inmates were shaking in their boots.
Everyone had seen on TV that spies were total pros. They couldnโt possibly stand a chance against her.
โKayla, look at you nowโฆโ Joyce just wouldnโt let up with her trash talk.
Raymond shook his head and turned to the officer beside him. โSend her to the psych ward.โ
โYes, Mr. Prescott.โ
Joyce was taken away on her own, while Kayla never even set foot inside.
Finally, Joyce snapped out of her crazy rant and asked, โWhy arenโt you locking her up?โ
โKayla didnโt commit any crime,โ Raymond replied.
โMr. Prescott, sheโs an international spy!โ Joyce yelled, totally stunned. โYou came here with her. Donโt you know?โ
โOh, Kayla just wanted to see you, so we just dropped by,โ Raymond said, sounding totally casual.
โWhat the hell? This isnโt what I imagined at all!โ Joyce thought, completely thrown off.
โJust like you wanted, Joyce. Iโm here to see you,โ Kayla said, her gaze calm and steady.
โYouโฆโ Joyce sputtered, totally thrown off.
She froze for a few seconds, then reflexively raised her hands to shield her head.
โWait, is she here to hit me?โ Joyce thought, suddenly panicking.
โCheck this out,โ Kayla said, pulling out a shiny new official badge.
It was for some department Joyce had never even heard of, stamped with a bold red government seal.
โThanks to you, Iโve landed a government job. Iโll be serving my country from now on,โ Kayla said as she put the badge away. โHappy now, Joyce?โ
โHow is this even possible?โ Joyce muttered, her eyes twitching in shock.
โOh, and by the way, my boss is my father-in-law,โ Kayla tossed out, like it was no big deal.
โWhat?โ Joyce gasped.
That was the final straw. Joyce totally lost it.
Joyce looked at Raymond, the man sheโd known since she was a kid, her voice trembling. โYouโฆ youโฆโ
โItโs time to let it go,โ Raymond said, his tone all business as he waved for the guards to take her away. And just like that, Joyce was escorted out.
Kayla turned back to Raymond and said respectfully, โThank you, Raymond.โ
โNo need for formalities between family. Just make sure not to mention this to Magnolia,โ Raymond replied.
โUnderstood,โ Kayla nodded.
Meanwhile, Tuff and Landon finally picked up Brianโs โpackageโ at the airport.
When they opened it, they were stunned to find a dossier detailing how the Limitless Sect had taken Kayla in.
There was also a full record of every spy mission the Limitless Sect had ever carried out โ turns out, Kayla never took part in a single one.
Brian explained that because Kayla had suffered memory loss as a child and still struggled with headaches, theyโd never assigned her any missions.
In other words, Kayla had never done anything to harm her country or its people.
โAwesomeโฆ this is such a relief!โ Tuff and Landon both let out a breath, excitement written all over their faces.
They hurried back with the evidence, only to be told, โKaylaโs already been taken away by Mr. Raymond Prescott.โ
