Chapter 406
The arrival of her family made Kayla forget about Brian for a while. The entire Prescott family was buzzing with excitement. Tuff and Maggie personally welcomed Gloria, and the two families exchanged warm greetings.
Gloria brought some pretty expensive gifts, which made Maggie a little embarrassed. “Gloria, you really didn’t have to bring gifts just to visit.”
“I meant to come earlier, but something came up. Hope that’s okay,” Gloria said with a smile. “Of course not! Kayla doesn’t have many friends in Lunova, so she’s really happy you’re here,” Maggie replied. “Kayla has been away from me for so long and has gone through a lot. I hope you’ll be patient with her and look after her,” Gloria said. “You’re too kind. Kayla is doing great, really great,” Maggie reassured her. Underneath all the polite words, Kayla could feel the real warmth between them. Gloria finally felt at ease, seeing for herself that Kayla wouldn’t be mistreated or wronged by her in–laws.
When they heard it was Kayla’s birthday, even Betty, who usually turned in early, came out to the main hall. Everyone gathered to celebrate Kayla’s birthday together. With everyone hyping her up, Kayla sang the birthday song, made her wish, and blew out the candles. She was so happy that it all felt like a dream. While the adults chatted away, Landen and Kimsey were happily eating cake and watching TV together. When the amusement park popped up on the screen, Kimsey’s eyes sparkled with excitement. He slid off the couch and crawled straight over to Maggie. Then, holding onto Maggie’s leg, he struggled to stand up, his tiny hands gently touching her bandaged right leg.
Amelia was in the middle of chatting with Kayla about having a second child when she turned around and saw Kimsey reaching out to touch Maggie’s bandaged leg. Her face fell in shock. In one swift motion, she darted over and scooped Kimsey up into her arms. Maggie, who absolutely adored little kids, was happily playing along with Kimsey’s baby talk. She was surprised at Amelia’s sudden reaction.
“Let me take Kimsey for a potty break,” Amelia said, making up an excuse as she carried Kimsey out of the room. Once they were alone, she whispered, “Kimsey, what were you up to?”
“Play… fun…” Kimsey mumbled. Kimsey was almost a year old, and his vocabulary was still pretty limited. But as his mom, Amelia knew exactly what he meant. Kimsey wanted to go to the amusement park. The last time they went to the amusement park was after he healed Kayla.
Amelia almost lost it. She quickly called out, “Landon, come out here for a sec!” “What’s up?” Landon asked. He had been chatting and drinking with Raymond, and he was feeling a little tipsy. “Kimsey might’ve done something to Maggie’s leg…” Amelia whispered, her voice shaking. Landon snapped to attention, instantly sober. He glanced back at the main hall, where Maggie was sitting in her wheelchair, laughing and chatting with everyone.
They had to go to the hospital now. Kayla had somehow ended up right next to Maggie, her forehead slick with nervous sweat. She and Landon exchanged a look, and Kayla started pushing Maggie’s wheelchair. “Mom, Landon found an amazing doctor for you. Let’s go see him now.” “Huh? But it’s so late…” Maggie blurted out, surprised. “Dr. Mitchell’s only free tonight,” Kayla replied, sounding calm, but she was practically rushing. Her heart was pounding so hard that she totally forgot to tell Tuff what was happening. The chatter in the main hall came to an abrupt halt as everyone looked over in surprise. Before anyone could react, Kayla was already wheeling Maggie out of the room. Landon quickly took over, pushing the wheelchair at an even faster pace. Kayla hurried right after him. Tuff finally realized what was happening and rushed to catch up. “Honey, wait for me…”
Amelia held Kimsey in her arms, feeling almost hopeless. ‘That was a fracture! Even Dr. Mitchell couldn’t make a broken bone snap back together in a second,’ she thought, panic rising in her chest. ‘Please let Kimsey really not have done anything just now…’ Amelia silently prayed.
“Mommy, fun…” Kimsey bounced in Amelia’s arms, practically bursting with excitement to go to the amusement park. Amelia took a deep breath and gave him a gentle smile. “Kimsey, the amusement park isn’t open at night. Let’s go tomorrow, okay?” “Okay!” Kimsey chirped, all smiles. He was still just a little kid, after all.
Landon piped up, “Amelia, I wanna go too!” “Alright, we’ll all go tomorrow. But for now, it’s bedtime,” Amelia said, smiling. After saying goodbye to Betty and Raymond, Amelia quickly called Landon as soon as they stepped outside. “Honey, where are you guys headed?” “Project Azureveil,” Landon replied. “Then I…” Amelia started. “You go home with Kimsey and wait for me,” Landon interrupted. He sounded calm and collected, and in the background, Amelia could hear Kayla and Maggie laughing and chatting. Clearly, Maggie still didn’t realize her leg was all better now, or maybe nothing had changed at all. Amelia realized she couldn’t risk letting Kimsey get close to Maggie anymore, so she decided to head home right away.
Daniel and Edith were watching TV in the living room when they saw Amelia and Gloria come back with Kimsey. They looked surprised and asked, “Where’s Landon?” “He’s taking Maggie to see Dr. Mitchell,” Gloria said with a smile. Daniel was confused. ‘Why are they suddenly rushing to see Dr. Mitchell in the middle of the night?’ Daniel wondered, ‘I mean, Maggie’s got a fractured leg. Not even Dr. Mitchell can magically fix that in a second. Is this really necessary?’ he thought.
“Daniel, I’m beat. I’m heading to my room,” Amelia managed a weak smile. Daniel raised an eyebrow. “Alright.” After everyone had gone to bed, Landon still hadn’t come back. Daniel knocked, then pushed open Amelia’s door. “Hey, what happened?” he asked, his brows furrowed with concern. ‘Daniel…’ Amelia hesitated, her words catching in her throat. She’d just gotten off the phone with Landon. Maggie’s leg was actually healed, just like she’d feared.
“You can tell me anything. I’m here for you,” Daniel said, his steady gaze and firm tone finally helped calm Amelia’s racing heart. She glanced at Kimsey, fast asleep, and finally confessed the secret. “Kimsey… he can heal people.” Daniel’s eyes went wide, completely stunned. ‘No way…’ “Kayla was cured by him. And today, he reached out and touched Maggie’s injured leg,” Amelia whispered, her heart pounding. “A… and then what happened?” Daniel stammered, barely able to get the words out. “Kimsey thought healing someone meant he’d get to go play at the amusement park… I should’ve noticed what he was thinking. It’s my fault,” Amelia said, her voice full of regret. “Does anyone else know?” Daniel asked, his voice trembling. Amelia shook her head. “Tuff didn’t even know before tonight. Now, everyone who should know, knows.” “And what about Maggie?” Daniel pressed, his voice barely above a whisper. “She’s been sedated for now. We told the Prescott family she needs to stay at Project Azureveil for treatment for a while,” Amelia explained. Daniel’s brows knit together. “Broken bones take months to heal. We can’t just keep her at Project Azureveil for that long, can we?” “No, we can’t. That’s why they’re all trying to figure out what to do,” Amelia replied. “Who?” Daniel asked. “Landon, Kayla, and Tuff,” Amelia answered. Amelia let out a bitter laugh. Her worst fear had come true. ‘Man, who would’ve guessed? In the end, it was Kimsey who spilt the biggest secret of all,’ Amelia thought with a sigh.
“Don’t worry. They’ll take care of it,” Daniel said gently, trying to comfort her. “Alright,” Amelia murmured. All Amelia could do was try to reassure herself. But after everything that happened tonight, she couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that Kimsey’s secret was about to be exposed. She lay awake, tossing and turning, her mind too restless to let her sleep.
“Maggie’s not the suspicious type. She won’t suspect a thing. Get some rest,” Daniel said, trying to reassure her. “Okay. Goodnight,” Amelia replied softly. As the door closed, both siblings were left alone with their worries. Daniel sat there for a long time, still unable to accept what he’d just learned. ‘So Monroe’s lifelong obsession–miracle healing—was actually real all along?’ he thought, his mind in turmoil. ‘If true healing exists… then is bringing the dead back to life possible too?’ Daniel’s thoughts spun wildly.
