โAre you trying to drive me to an early grave?โ Maggie clutched her forehead, her vision going dark for a moment.
Kayla shot her a look and played it up even more. โUgh, Iโm so dizzyโฆ My headโฆโ She collapsed onto the table with a flourish.
Maggie just stared in silence.
The servants couldnโt help but twitch at the spectacle. They thought, โMrs. Kingsley is a force to be reckoned with! If she dares to school Maggie, her mother-in-law, what chance do we have? Better keep our heads down. Jobs are tough to find these days. No way weโre getting on her bad side.โ
โMaggie,โ Joyce called out sweetly.
Kayla, who had been faking a faint, arched her brow and sat up. โMs. Lambert, being out of a job is working out for you. Now youโve got all the time in the world to visit family.โ
โExactly! Now I can come and keep Maggie company all the time,โ Joyce replied with a forced smile, shooting Kayla a look.
โItโs all because of the wretched woman that Iโve lost my reputation in the medical field!โ Joyce fumed inwardly.
โGreat. At least Maggie wonโt be bored,โ Kayla said, closing her book and heading back to her room.
Maggie was left speechless in front of Joyce, which only made her angrier.
โAn ungrateful kid!โ
โDonโt be upset, Maggie. I came here today for a reason,โ Joyce said.
โSo, did you find a surrogate?โ Maggie asked, her face immediately lighting up with delight.
Since Kayla refused to use her eggs for surrogacy, Maggie simply arranged for someone elseโs eggs to be used.
Maggie thought, โBottom line, the Prescott family must have an heir. When the time comes, Kayla will have no choice but to accept it, whether she wants to or not!โ
โMaggie, Ameliaโs birthday is coming up in two days. Word is, the Zuckerberg family is throwing a huge bash, and Tuff is on the guest listโฆโ Joyce hinted.
โSo, youโre planning to get him wasted?โ Maggie caught on instantly. โButโฆ Wonโt that mess up the, you know, sample?โ
โMaggie, trust me. Iโm a pro at this,โ Joyce said with a confident wink.
Maggie squeezed Joyceโs hand, her eyes full of hope. โIโm counting on you.โ
โRelax! Iโve got this,โ Joyce replied with a sweet, knowing smile.
Maggie sighed. โIf only you were my daughter-in-lawโฆโ
Chapter 356
โOh, Maggie, donโt start with that. Tuff is already hitched.โ
โHe went and married a woman who canโt even give me grandchildren. Itโs so frustrating that I could scream! At least Iโve got you to help me out,โ Maggie grumbled.
โI get it, Maggie. Youโre worried about having a grandchild,โ Joyce said, nodding sympathetically.
โItโs not just that.โ Maggieโs temper flared. โKayla doesnโt give me the slightest bit of respect! She acts like I donโt even exist.โ
โWith an in-law as big as you, how could anyone possibly fit you in their eyes? Whoโs got eyes that big anyway?โ Landonโs icy voice rang out.
Maggie froze, her face turning red with embarrassment. She shot a glare at the butler. โWhy didnโt you let me know we had guests?โ
โMrs. Prescott, they came in with Mr. Prescottโฆโ the butler stammered, clearly flustered.
โMom, watch what you say from now on,โ Tuff said, his face dark with anger.
Landon had been worried sick that Kayla might get bullied by the Prescott family, and Tuff had sworn heโd protect her no matter what. And now, his mom was talking smack about Kayla, right where people could hear.
โIโฆ I was just saying whatever came to mind,โ Maggie said with a forced laugh. โSo, little Landon, did you just get into Lunova today?โ
โDid she just call me "Little Landon"? Wow, that nickname is something,โ Landon thought, his lips twitching.
Landon had never been called โLittle Landonโ in his entire life. Even Tuff cringed at the nickname.
โMom, call him by his name,โ Tuff said.
Landon waved it off. โNo worries. Iโm a junior here. โLittle Landonโ is fine by me.โ
โHello, Mrs. Prescott,โ Amelia said with a warm smile, stepping forward with Kimsey in her arms.
Kimsey was nine months old, chubby, and adorable.
Maggie, who had been longing for a grandson, couldnโt take her eyes off him. โOh my, what a cute little guy!โ She reached out to hold Kimsey, but Kimsey promptly spat a mouthful of drool right in her face.
โMaggie!โ Joyce quickly grabbed a napkin to wipe Maggieโs face.
Amelia looked apologetic. โIโm so sorry, Mrs. Prescott. Heโs teething, so heโs been spitting a lot.โ
โItโs fine,โ Maggie said, forcing a smile.
Maggie couldnโt exactly get mad at a baby, could she? She just had to swallow her frustration.
Joyce, not about to let it go, piped up, โMrs. Kingsley, you canโt let him do whatever he wants, you know?โ
Chapter 156
โSo what do you want me to do? Tape his mouth shut, or smack him?โ Amelia retorted.
โAt least discipline him a bit!โ Joyce huffed.
Amelia plopped Kimsey into Joyceโs arms. โGo ahead and teach him.โ
โHeheโฆโ Kimsey was fiddling with his mouth, smiling with pure innocence.
With a baby this adorable, anyone who tried to scold him would look like the wicked witch in a fairy tale. Joyce knew she couldnโt lay a hand on the baby. If she dared, Landon would probably kill her on the spot.
With an awkward smile, she handed Kimsey back to Amelia. โBetter not.โ
It finally clicked for Maggie. That was why Kayla had been faking a faint earlier.
Maggie thought, โSo thatโs the Kingsley family style! Thatโs how the Kingsleys do things! If thereโs a problem, they face it head-on. And if someoneโs going to play the victim, they make sure to beat everyone to it.โ
โYeah. Ms. Lambert, you are not even married yet. How would you know anything about raising a kid?โ Amelia said, turning to Tuff. โTuff, arenโt you Ms. Lambertโs god-brother? Maybe you should keep her in line a bit.โ
Tuff thought, โKeep her in line? How? Matchmaking? Her parents can handle that. Keep her from acting out? Yeah, thatโs probably what Amelia meant.โ
Tuff stepped up, hands clasped behind his back, and lectured, โJoyce, you should be job hunting if youโre unemployed. And quit dropping by other peopleโs places for no reason.โ
โIโm taking some time off. No rush to find a job,โ Joyce replied awkwardly. Underneath her businesslike suit, she was still a princess at heart.
โTuffโs changed. How could he call me out before everyone? Doesnโt he care about my reputation at all?โ Joyce fumed inwardly.
โIf youโre on break, stay home and chill,โ Tuff added.
Maggie couldnโt take it anymore. โI asked Joyce to come and keep me company.โ
Tuff looked around, searching for Kayla. โMom, whereโs Kayla?โ
Kayla had told him sheโd be on the terrace, reading and waiting for him. So where was she? Tuffโd even told the butler not to announce them, planning to surprise Kayla by bringing Landonโs family in.
โWhere could she have gone?โ Tuff wondered.
โShe was here a minute ago. Maybe she got tired and went back to her room,โ Maggie said, her gaze flickering as she met Landonโs scrutinizing eyes. She quickly added, โSheโs a bit frail these days, so she needs plenty of rest.โ
โMrs. Prescott, Kaylaโs not in the best shape. Please look after her carefully from now on,โ Landon said, his voice polite but with a clear edge. โIf the Prescott family canโt take good care of her, donโt blame me if I have to intervene.โ
Chapter 356
He was being courteous on the surface, but the threat was obvious. It was a clear warning, not respectful to Maggie as the elder.
Maggie awkwardly replied, โSheโs doing fine here! Why donโt you go and see her in her room? Joyce and I have things to discuss.โ
Then, she hurried off with Joyce in tow.
Joyce complained sullenly, โMaggie, the Kingsley family has zero respect for you. They donโt care about the elders at all.โ
โItโs all because Tuff wonโt stand up for me. Whatever. The bigger plans come first, so letโs let them have their way for now,โ Maggie sighed.
She knew there was no way she could get Tuff to leave Kayla, so she had to put up with it for now. Once she had a grandson, Kayla could do whatever she wanted, for all Maggie cared. Sheโd heard the Kingsley family had showered Kayla with all sorts of engagement giftsโcash, real estate, even company sharesโฆ One day, even Landonโs earnings would end up in her grandsonโs hands.
โMaggie, you donโt deserve this!โ Joyce said, her voice full of sympathy.
โForget it,โ Maggie said, waving her hand dismissively.
If putting up with a little humiliation meant her grandson could be raised as Kaylaโs own, so be it.
