Listen to this chapter:

The following afternoon, the plane landed in Norava. Landon and the others were finally back home. Gloria assumed they had returned from a business trip, and with a beaming smile, she instructed the kitchen to prepare a grand welcome home meal.

Landenโ€™s eyes were red, and he was nervously wringing his little hands. The call from Jonny yesterday had deeply frightened him.

โ€œMom, letโ€™s go check on Kimsey,โ€ Amelia said.

โ€œSure thing!โ€ Gloria agreed eagerly, and Amelia led her away.

Kaylaโ€™s heart ached for her son as she opened her arms wide. โ€œMommyโ€ฆโ€ Landen choked out. He dove into her embrace and finally broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.

Tuff crouched down and pulled them both into a hug, murmuring, โ€œItโ€™s okay, itโ€™s okayโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThat callโ€ฆ That guyโ€ฆโ€ Landen gasped, his entire body shaking. At that moment, Kayla suddenly recalled the call from yesterday. She hesitated, uncertain about how to tell Landen.

Jonny was Landenโ€™s biological father, and Landen was pretty happy when he talked to him on the phone yesterday. Kayla was unsure about telling him that Jonny was already dead.

โ€œMommy, did he hurt you?โ€ Landen asked.

Kayla froze, letting go of him. โ€œLanden, what did you just say?โ€

โ€œHโ€“heโ€™s a bad guyโ€ฆโ€ Landen wiped his eyes. โ€œUncle Landon told me heโ€™s a bad guy. I even overheard Grandma and Uncle Landon fighting about him. Anyway, heโ€™s a bad guy. I donโ€™t want him as my dad.โ€

Kaylaโ€™s heart was a whirlwind of emotions. Unbeknownst to her, the Kyle family had already influenced Landenโ€™s thoughts about his biological father while she wasnโ€™t watching.

โ€œWhat else did Uncle Landon say?โ€ Tuff asked.

โ€œUncle Landon said youโ€™re my dad.โ€ Landen snuggled into Tuffโ€™s arms. โ€œDaddy.โ€

Tuff was overwhelmed with emotion; it felt as if his heart might burst. He had never asked Landen to call him โ€œDadโ€ since the wedding, but today, Landen did so all on his own. โ€œThatโ€™s my boy! With me here, you donโ€™t have to be afraid of anything!โ€ Tuff exclaimed.

โ€œYeah!โ€ Landen nodded vigorously, a smile finally breaking through.

Kaylaโ€™s tears flowed freely. โ€œLanden, were you scared yesterday?โ€

โ€œI was so scared. But Mommy, did I do well?โ€ Landen asked, looking up at her.

โ€œYes, you did great!โ€ Kayla said.

Tuff looked puzzled. โ€œWait, Landen knew what happened yesterday?โ€

โ€œLanden called me, and it just so happened Jonny picked upโ€ฆโ€ Kayla went over the whole thing again for him.

Tuff scooped Landen up and showered him with kisses. โ€œYou were awesome! Just a few words from you, and you kept the enemy in check!โ€

โ€œHe had Mommyโ€™s phone, and I was so scared.โ€ Landen cupped Kaylaโ€™s face, checking her all over to make sure she was okay. โ€œMommy, did he hit you?โ€

โ€œNoโ€ฆโ€ Kayla hugged him tightly. Landen was the only happiness she had during those wild years ruled by Jonny.

โ€œAlright, letโ€™s wrap up dinner, then weโ€™ll head home!โ€ Tuff said, determined to shield Gloria from seeing Kayla in this condition. After dinner, Tuff took Kayla and Landen back home.

Gloria felt a twinge of sadness as she watched them leave, but she understood that Kayla now had her own family. โ€œAmy, Kayla doesnโ€™t seem well, whatโ€™s going on?โ€ Gloria asked. โ€œDid they fight?โ€

โ€œNo, sheโ€™s just been sick for a few days and hasnโ€™t really bounced back yet,โ€ Amelia fibbed.

โ€œOh! I just canโ€™t see Tuff winning an argument against Kayla,โ€ Gloria said.

Amelia remained quiet as Gloria continued, โ€œLook at all of youโ€“youโ€™ve lost so much weight. Not used to being abroad, are you?โ€ Gloria playfully pinched Amyโ€™s cheek. โ€œYou were only away for a couple of weeks, and your face already looks so sharp!โ€

โ€œOf course. Thereโ€™s no place like home,โ€ Amy said with a smile. โ€œMom, Wesley said youโ€™re recovering well from your surgery. Is that true?โ€

โ€œOf course itโ€™s true. Iโ€™m feeling great now. I could even help you guys out with a few more grandkids if you wanted.โ€ Gloria winked. โ€œSo, when are you going to give Kimsey a sister?โ€

โ€œMom, Kimsey isnโ€™t even a year old yet!โ€ Amelia laughed.

โ€œI know, Iโ€™m not in a rush. I want you to take care of yourself. Let Landon handle the companyโ€™s matters. You donโ€™t need to help him. Let the man worry about putting food on the table,โ€ Gloria said.

โ€œOkay,โ€ Amelia said, recalling all the hurdles she had faced and the numerous doctors she had consulted in her journey to have a baby. Her heart ached for Kayla; she understood just how hopeless things must seem for her.

The Prescott family would never allow Tuff to avoid having a child of his own. Just the thought of facing Maggie about it would be challenging enough.

Later that night, after their intimate moment, Amelia snuggled close to Landonโ€™s chest and brought up Tuffโ€™s feelings about having children. Landonโ€™s voice grew cold as he replied, โ€œIf he dares to hurt Kayla, heโ€™ll have to answer to me first.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t resort to threats or violence. Once youโ€™re married, it involves more than just the two of you. The Prescott family is quite influential,โ€ Amelia said with a frown as she traced circles on his chest. โ€œWe need to find a way to help Kayla recover.โ€

โ€œWhat did Dr. Shawn say?โ€ Landon asked.

โ€œHe went to consult with other specialists, but I have no idea when heโ€™ll be back. Maybe Dr. Mitchell could take a look as well,โ€ Amelia suggested.

โ€œI already talked to Dr. Mitchell about it. He said thereโ€™s nothing he can do,โ€ Landon replied.

โ€œWhat?โ€ Amelia was disappointed. โ€œIf she canโ€™t have kids, fine, but at least thereโ€™s something they can do about her monthly bleeding, right?โ€

โ€œNothing can be done,โ€ Landon said. He felt for Kayla, too.

During Ameliaโ€™s health struggles, he was so anxious that his brows were constantly furrowed. Now, Kaylaโ€™s situation is even more serious than Ameliaโ€™s ever was. He could not possibly feel at ease.

โ€œWeโ€™ll just have to keep looking for solutions. Thereโ€™s no need to rush,โ€ Amelia sighed. โ€œTomorrow, Iโ€™ll go out and pick up some good tonics to help boost her energy. Iโ€™ll make sure Kayla gets plenty of them.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m counting on you for that. Tomorrow Iโ€™ve got to head back to the office, and I should also drop by to see Jeffrey,โ€ Landon said.

Just hearing Jeffreyโ€™s name made Ameliaโ€™s heart flutter with anxiety. He had always embodied loyalty, yet he ended up with a secret child due to someone elseโ€™s scheming. โ€˜What if Tuff does something like that one day? What if he goes behind Kaylaโ€™s back and has a child with someone else?โ€™ Amelia couldnโ€™t shake off her worries.

The more she thought about it, the more anxious she became. The following day, she visited Kaylaโ€™s house with some supplements, wanting to check in on her. As fate would have it, Maggie also arrived.

โ€œWerenโ€™t you supposed to be pregnant? Why does your belly still look flat?โ€ Maggie stared at Kaylaโ€™s stomach, then looked at her pale face, and snapped, โ€œDid you have a miscarriage? Did you make me lose my grandchild?โ€

Kayla had always been strong, but today she couldnโ€™t find the strength to respond sharply. Back then, she had lied to avoid drama, and thought she would eventually have a child with the Prescott family anyway. But now, that dream has gone for good.

โ€œMrs. Prescott,โ€ Amelia called out quickly, trying to defuse the tension.

Maggieโ€™s expression remained frosty. โ€œDonโ€™t waste your time bringing me gifts. The Prescott family doesnโ€™t need anything. Today, you owe me an explanation about my grandchildโ€“right now!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not pregnant,โ€ Kayla said.

Maggie froze for a second, then her anger flared even hotter. โ€œHow dare you lie to me?โ€

โ€œMrs. Prescott, please donโ€™t get upset,โ€ Amelia quickly interjected. โ€œKayla indeed lied, but letโ€™s be honestโ€“they just got married! Theyโ€™re still in their honeymoon phase!โ€

โ€œThat doesnโ€™t mean she can lie to me! Especially about something this important? Everyone in Lunova knows the Prescott family is expecting a baby. What am I supposed to tell them now?โ€ Maggie snapped. โ€œKayla, you need to get pregnant, and fast!โ€

โ€œMrs. Prescott, having a baby isnโ€™t as simple as a chicken laying eggsโ€“you canโ€™t just snap your fingers to make it happen!โ€ Amelia chuckled, attempting to lighten the mood. โ€œLandon and I were married for quite some time before Kimsey finally came along.โ€

โ€œWhy not? With modern medicine, anything is possible. Come back to Lunova with me, and Iโ€™ll arrange for you to see the best doctors. Weโ€™ll get you checked out and ensure it happens soon,โ€ Maggie said, her tone finally softening a bit.

Kayla noticed that Maggie was hesitating a bit, but if she returned to Lunova for treatment now, it would essentially mean exposing her health issues, which was the last thing she wanted. Her relationship with Maggie was already a significant source of stress for Tuff; she didnโ€™t want to add to his burdens.

Kayla stood her ground. โ€œMy mom just had surgery, and she needs me here.โ€

โ€œExactly! My mom would be heartbroken if Kayla left,โ€ Amelia chimed in.

Maggie scoffed, her voice dripping with sarcasm. โ€œIf you canโ€™t bear to leave your mom, then why bother getting married? Just stay single and live at home. Or better yet, why not find yourself a liveโ€“in sonโ€“inโ€“law? That way, you can stay close to your mother for the rest of your life.โ€
