Chapter 31

โ€œMr. Kingsley, are you awake?โ€

Aaron was very surprised, and Landonโ€™s chest heaved violently.

As Landon adjusted his focus, he slowly calmed down.

It became apparent that it was all an illusion; Amelia had not been bullied.

Finally, Landon could see the world clearly before him.

After a three-month slumber, winter had given way to spring, and the trees outside his window were now in bloom.

โ€œMr. Kingsley, can you see things now?โ€ Aaron peered intently at Landon.

Landon offered a nod.

He observed his typically austere room, now adorned with feminine touches, radiating a profound sense of warmth.

โ€œMr. Kingsley, say something. Itโ€™s been a long time since Iโ€™ve heard your voice,โ€ Aaron said, his voice brimming with anticipation.

โ€œMr. Kingsley woke up, so it must mean he can move, right?โ€

However, his anticipation dwindled in the ensuing silence.

Aaron furrowed his brow. โ€œMr. Kingsley, are you still unable to speak?โ€

Landonโ€™s chest heaved once more. โ€˜Damn it. I canโ€™t control my vocal cords or mouth.โ€™

He attempted to lift his legsโ€ฆ but they remained unresponsive. The initial shock of waking up turned to sinking disappointment. Landon could only open his eyesโ€ฆ

โ€œYou still canโ€™t move?โ€ Aaron echoed the disappointment, but soon chuckled, trying to console him, โ€œItโ€™s alright. You managed to lift your left hand last night, and today, you woke up. Your recovery is already quite rapid.โ€

Yet for Landon, it wasnโ€™t enough. โ€˜Foolish Amelia went to Edwards Group alone. Can she make it unscathed? Forget it, the priority now is to save her first.โ€™

Landon slowly raised his left hand, pointing to the phone on the bedside table.

โ€œMr. Kingsley, you want your phone?โ€ Aaron swiftly handed Landon his mobile device.

After the phone was unlocked with facial recognition, Landon paused once again.

He didnโ€™t know Ameliaโ€™s mobile number, nor could he talk to her over the phone directly.

โ€œMr. Kingsley, what are you attempting to do?โ€ Aaron inquired.

Landon glared at him, opened WhatsApp, and typed: [Amelia]

โ€œOh, youโ€™re asking about Mrs. Kingsley. She went to the company today for a clock-in and left, but she didnโ€™t request my company. It seemed she went to deal with a personal matter.โ€

[A personal matter?]

โ€˜Aaron didnโ€™t go with her.โ€™ Landonโ€™s eyes darkened with rage.

He closed his eyes, and when he reopened them, they were filled with anger: [Call her back. Immediately. Right now.]

Chapter 31

โ€œUnderstood.โ€

Aaron hurriedly dialed Amelia.

Landon then commanded: [Put it on speaker]

Aaron complied without delay.

โ€œMrs. Kingsley, where are you? Mr. Kingsley is asking for you. Please return now.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m occupied at the moment,โ€ Amelia replied, sensing something was wrong and asking, โ€œYou just said heโ€™s asking for me? Is he awake?โ€

Aaron glanced at Landon and tactfully responded, โ€œMr. Kingsley has opened his eyes.โ€

โ€œJust opened his eyes?โ€ Amelia let out a sigh of relief.

โ€˜It almost scared the shit out of me. Iโ€™ve just got 100 million dollars from the Kingsley Group. If Landon recovers now, heโ€™ll certainly reclaim his money.โ€™

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œThen take good care of him. Iโ€™ll come home later.โ€ Amelia quickly ended the call.

Aaron tried calling her again, but her phone was switched off.

Aaron looked at Landon with a helpless expression. โ€œMr. Kingsley, it seems Mrs. Kingsleyโ€™s mobile phone has run out of battery.โ€

Landon took a deep breath and typed with his finger: [How much did she transfer from Kingsley Group?]

โ€œ100 million dollars.โ€

As expected, she kept her word. She took 100 million dollars to the Edwards Group. Wasnโ€™t she jumping into the trap now? Obviously, itโ€™s too late to stop her. I can only approach this from other aspects.โ€™

[Aaron, contact all the debt collectors of the Edwards Group immediately. Let them know that anyone who dares to harm Amelia is against the Kingsley family.]

Aaron was taken aback and quickly issued the order. Then he asked, โ€œMr. Kingsley, did Mrs. Kingsley go to Edwards Group?โ€

[Why are you still here? Go.]

โ€œYes, sir.โ€

Aaron broke out in a cold sweat and rushed to Edwards Group.

In fact, Amelia didnโ€™t go to Edwards Group; instead, she made her way to the hospital.

Walter had just had fresh dressing for his wound changed and was leisurely soaking up the sun, comfortably awaiting the good news.

Debt collectors holding nearly 100 million dollars in claims were all gathering at the Edwards Group. Once Amelia went there, if she failed to settle the debts, she would not be permitted to leave.

Walter believed that given Ameliaโ€™s timid and cowardly nature, she would undoubtedly pay up immediately.

With half-closed eyes, Walter felt increasingly delighted the more he pondered the situation. He was so lost in thought that he didnโ€™t notice when Amelia arrived.

โ€œDad, are you enjoying the sun?โ€

โ€œYes. What?โ€

Chapter 31

Walter jolted awake and sat up. โ€œAmy, what brings you here?โ€

โ€˜Shouldnโ€™t she be at the company right now?โ€™

โ€œDad, your company is in deep debt,โ€ Amelia said, taking an apple and slowly peeling it.

Walter asked nervously, โ€œHave you been to the company?โ€

โ€œI saw in the car that it was swarming with debt collectors, and I didnโ€™t dare to go in.โ€

Walter was left speechless.

โ€œDad, sell the house,โ€ Amelia suggested.

Walter nearly bit his tongue. โ€œAre you out of your mind? If we sell the house, where will we live?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re supposed to pay off debts. Since the family is broke, you have to liquidate the real estate,โ€ Amelia said, โ€œDidnโ€™t you buy Sandra several downtown shops? Sell those too to settle the debts.โ€

Walter was aghast. โ€˜The purchase of those shops for Sandra hasnโ€™t been made public. How could she know?โ€™

โ€œThe seaside villa registered under Melissaโ€™s name could be sold for 15 million dollars. If you combine that with the other assets, youโ€™d have 60 million dollars.โ€

Each time Amelia revealed a secret, Walter felt as if heโ€™d been struck by lightning.

Because Amelia was aware of everything about his financial dealings.

Walterโ€™s face darkened rapidly. โ€œDid you go to the Real Estate Management Bureau to investigate me?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t have time for that,โ€ Amelia chuckled.

In her previous life, these secrets were kept hidden until her death. Now, she exposed them to embarrass Walter.

The so-called lack of funds to settle the debts was merely a fabrication. Walter clearly intended to use Ameliaโ€™s money to patch up the Edwards familyโ€™s finances without affecting Melissa and Sandraโ€™s interests.

Walter had no idea what to say. โ€˜But Amelia is already married into a rich family. Why should I sell my familyโ€™s properties?โ€™

He composed himself and said sternly, โ€œAmy, Melissa bought those properties herselfโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWithout spending family money?โ€ Amelia exclaimed, โ€œOh my, has Melissa returned to her old line of work?โ€

Confused by her words, Walter asked, โ€œWhat old line of work?โ€

โ€œFinding a sugar daddy. Dad, didnโ€™t Melissa do the same thing to you so that she became your wife now?โ€ Ameliaโ€™s eyes were filled with sarcasm. โ€œDad, you have to be careful not to get cheated on.โ€

Walter raised his hand in anger.

โ€œWhat? You want to hit me?โ€ Amelia slammed the half-peeled apple and knife down on the table.

Walter came to his senses. โ€˜Amelia is now my cash cow, and I canโ€™t afford to annoy her.โ€™

โ€œNo, my head is itchy; I was scratching,โ€ Walter pretended to scratch his head and then cried out, โ€œOuch.โ€

Amelia remained unmoved, as if she hadnโ€™t heard him.

Walter gritted his teeth and reminded her, โ€œAlas, the sulfuric acid really hurts. Fortunately, it was splashed on my back. If it had been on your face, you would have been disfigured.โ€

โ€œYeah, Angelaโ€™s aim was so precise.โ€

When Walter heard the name suddenly, his face changed dramatically. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œAngela, Dr. Greenโ€™s wife,โ€ Amelia slowly curled her lips, her beautiful face filled with ridicule. โ€œYou hired her to splash sulfuric acid on you and then forgot about her?โ€
