Chapter 309

After much deliberation, Edith decided to reach out to Amelia for help. Amelia was Daniel’s younger sister, who was the most understanding person Edith knew and would surely be able to assist her.

“Amy, it’s me…” Edith said.

“Edith? Why did you change your number?” Amelia asked, looking at the unfamiliar number on her phone. But she quickly tried to reassure her, “Edith, are you okay?”

“Not really…” Edith replied.

“What’s wrong?” Amelia asked, her heart racing with concern.

‘Why do I have a bad feeling about this? Could this be about Daniel?’ Amelia thought anxiously, her heart tightening with worry.

“I’m pregnant, and there’s a slight risk. But I don’t want to see Daniel. Amy, do you get what I mean?” Edith asked, her voice trembling a little.

“I do!” Amelia replied without hesitation.

She knew that even a second of hesitation would let Edith…

Hearing that, Edith let out a sigh of relief and smiled. “Amy, I can’t leave Pinecrest for now. Can you help me lay low?”

“Sure, I’ll handle it,” Amelia replied quickly, her mind racing. “Which hospital are you at? Do you need to move anything from your place?”

“I’ll text you,” Edith said.

“Alright! Don’t worry about anything, just rest and wait for someone to come pick you up,” Amelia reassured her.

“Thank you, Amy…” Edith murmured, her voice full of gratitude.

But Amelia’s feelings were all over the place. ‘It’s too soon for thanks,’ she thought to herself. The two of them had already started sending out wedding invitations, and now—just like that—their relationship blew up out of nowhere! Things had been so crazy at home lately, she hadn’t even had time to ask Daniel what he did to piss Edith off. Since Edith came to her for help, there was no way she could just stand by and do nothing.

After calming Edith down, Amelia called Wesley. “Hey, do you know any doctors at Pinecrest Women’s and Children’s Hospital? I need a favor…”

“Pathetic,” Night Owl said, propping her chin up with one hand as she watched Amelia make all these arrangements. “You just agreed, and now you’re backstabbing me.”

“This isn’t backstabbing—I’m helping them end up together,” Amelia replied with a smile. “Edith is really sensitive and always feels inferior when it comes to relationships. If I don’t step in, she might avoid my brother for the rest of her life.”

“You’ve got your own shit to deal with, and you’re still meddling in other people’s business,” Night Owl chuckled, her face full of disdain.

Ever since Dawson died, she found herself growing colder and more indifferent to all that romance drama. If it wasn’t her business, she couldn’t care less. When it came to life and freedom, love didn’t mean anything to her.

“Alas,” Amelia let out a long sigh. ‘If it weren’t for my mess, Daniel wouldn’t have been delayed in getting married,’ she blamed herself. ‘Edith’s been away from home for days and hasn’t seen a trace of him. She must be completely heartbroken by now,’ she guessed.

With that in mind, Amelia called Daniel. “Daniel, it’s me…”

“Amy, I’m really worried right now. Can we talk later?” Daniel said, racing down the highway on his motorcycle. Every time he thought about his wife and kid being in danger, he could barely breathe.

“Daniel, Edith got in touch with me. Don’t get worked up—just pull over somewhere safe and let’s talk,” Amelia said.

“Oh? Alright!” Daniel replied, barely able to hide his surprise. His eyes grew wet with excitement.

There was a rest stop just up ahead, so he pulled in, parked his motorcycle, and took off his helmet. He took a few deep breaths, trying to steady his nerves, before finally daring to call Amelia back. “Amy, you can tell me now.”

“Edith had a fall because of low blood sugar—it’s not serious. She’s at Pinecrest Women’s and Children’s Hospital right now. I had Wesley arrange a VIP room and the best OB–GYN in Pinecrest for her,” Amelia explained. “She reached out to me because she doesn’t want to see you and wants to hide. I’m coaxing her to stay in the hospital for now. Once you get to Pinecrest, just handle things as you see fit. And please, don’t scare her off again,” Amelia added.

“Alright, alright…” Daniel replied, agreeing over and over again.

‘The baby’s fine, and Edith hasn’t run away—finally, I can breathe easy,’ Daniel thought, feeling a huge weight lift off his shoulders.

“By the way, how exactly did you end up upsetting her?” Amelia asked, her tone full of concern.

Daniel paused for a few seconds before replying, “The Meyers family gave me an ultimatum—they said I had to stop interfering with Joanna if I wanted to marry Edith. I refused, and that’s when Edith took off.”

“So that’s how it is…” Amelia sighed, feeling even worse for Edith. Joanna wasn’t exactly a saint, but she really did love Edith—way more than she ever cared about Maisie. It wasn’t surprising that the Meyers family would make a demand like that. But did they ever think about what Edith was going through?

“I was going to go look for her, but then you had your situation going on, so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to put it off for a few days…” Daniel said, his voice full of regret.

“Daniel, Edith didn’t run away because she was angry. She just didn’t want to make things harder for you,” Amelia cut in.

At this, Daniel froze for a moment. “Is that really it?” he asked, a bit stunned.

“Yeah,” Amelia replied firmly. “When you get to Pinecrest, just stay by her side quietly and give her time to let go of her worries.“

“Alright, I understand,” Daniel answered. He let out a long sigh, feeling a wave of guilt wash over him. Everyone had been saying that Edith fled Lunova and the Zuckerberg family because she was mad at him for putting the wedding on hold for Joanna. He had thought that was the case, too. But it turned out he was wrong. Edith always put him first. It was just that he didn’t realize how thoughtful and selfless she was.

“Daniel! Daniel!” Maisie called out, finally catching up to him.

Seeing that Daniel looked pale, she thought he might be hurt. “Daniel, what’s wrong?” she asked, her voice full of concern.

“Mais, Edith’s fine. She reached out to Amy,” Daniel said, his voice hoarse as he explained what had happened.

“That scared me to death! I was so afraid she’d run off again,” Maisie let out a huge sigh of relief, patting her chest.

“You should head back to Norava and help Amy keep an eye on the house. I’m going to Pinecrest to find Edith,” Daniel said.

“I want to go too…” Maisie requested.

“If you show up, she’ll think I came with you, and that’ll just scare her off,” Daniel said perplexedly.

Maisie frowned anxiously, her brows knitted together. “But what if you two run into each other?” she asked, her voice full of worry.

“I’ll accept the Meyers family’s condition,” Daniel said.

Maisie’s eyes went wide in shock. “Wait, you mean that condition?” she blurted out, her voice trembling.

“Yeah! I’ll free Joanna so the Meyers family can happily marry Edith to me,” Daniel replied, his tone resolute. His gaze was unwavering. There wasn’t a hint of reluctance left in him.

“Once the Mystic Sect is gone and she has nowhere else to turn, you just keep an eye on her and take care of her in her old age,” Daniel added.

“Daniel…” Maisie choked out, her voice thick with emotion. Her eyes welled up with tears as she threw herself into Daniel’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably. Blood ran deeper than principle—even a wicked mother was still a mother. But Maisie just couldn’t get Joanna to change for the better. These past few days, Maisie had been feeling guilty toward her dad and Daniel, but she couldn’t stop worrying about her mom’s safety either.

She really didn’t know what to do.

“Alright, that’s enough crying. I’m heading to Pinecrest now. Chasing after me all this way must have worn you out—take a breather at the rest stop before you head back,” Daniel said, giving his sister a warm smile as he gently wiped away her tears.

‘Joanna, if you have even a shred of conscience left, then for Edith and Maisie’s sake, please stop doing harm,’ Daniel thought.

“Daniel, take my car,” Maisie said, handing him the keys. “Your wife’s pregnant—she really shouldn’t be on a motorcycle.”

Daniel thought for a moment, then took the keys. “Don’t take the highway on the bike, and text me when you get home safe,” he told her.

“Okay,” Maisie replied.

Maisie smiled through her tears, watching Daniel drive away. Then she looked up at the sky and whispered, “God, please, just let my family be whole and happy again.”

As evening approached, the sun still hadn’t set in Pinecrest, while night had already fallen in Dreicean. Landon returned from the café in a great mood. Instead of going straight to his room, he lingered on the terrace to enjoy the night view.

“Move aside,” Monica ordered, her voice full of spoiled arrogance. She gave the command like she was used to getting her way. Landon glanced back at her. With her doll–like face and princess–perfect styling, she snuggled up to the fifty–year–old Paul like some runaway Disney royalty. They totally gave off major father–daughter vibes.

“Get out of the way, didn’t you hear me?” Monica huffed, her tone full of spoiled impatience. “We’re having our date here!”
