Chapter 272

Finally, Joyce realized that Kayla was nothing like anyone she had ever met before.

Kayla was strongโ€“not someone she could easily mess with.

Joyce took a deep breath and said, word by word, โ€œThe Prescott family will never accept your illegitimate child!โ€

โ€œIf they donโ€™t, so be it. I donโ€™t care,โ€ Kayla replied nonchalantly.

โ€˜What a joke. Itโ€™s not even my kid. Why should I give a damn?โ€™ Kayla thought to herself.

โ€œYou donโ€™t even care about your own child?โ€ Joyce asked, stunned.

Kayla couldnโ€™t be bothered to answer. She was just about to walk out when she heard footsteps in the hallway, followed by Tuffโ€™s voice.

โ€œAmelia, you have to help me talk some sense into Kaylaโ€ฆโ€ Tuff said.

Joyceโ€™s eyes flickered. The moment Tuff stepped in, she grabbed the glass from the table and, in one swift motion, splashed it onto herself.

โ€œWhat are you doing, Miss Kingsley?โ€ Joyceโ€™s voice trembled, sounding aggrieved and on the verge of tears.

Her words quivered with a sob, as if sheโ€™d been deeply wronged.

Tuff and Amelia, who had just walked in, stood there, frozen.

Tuff cursed inwardly, โ€˜Crap, things have already escalated!โ€™

โ€œIโ€™m just telling the truth. I really didnโ€™t mean to cause any trouble in your familyโ€ฆโ€ Joyce said, her voice trembling.

Water was dripping down her hair and face, soaking her neck and the front of her shirt.

Her eyes were rimmed red, and she bit her lower lip hard, looking every bit the picture of a wronged victim.

Kayla narrowed her eyes and turned to Tuff. โ€œI didnโ€™t do it.โ€

โ€œWhat, do you think I splashed myself on purpose?โ€ Joyce choked out, tears brimming in her eyes, looking utterly wronged.

Amelia frowned.

She couldnโ€™t help but sneer inwardly, โ€˜Oh, this isnโ€™t just a run-of-the-mill bitch act. She is putting on the airs of a cultured intellectual.โ€™

โ€˜Sheโ€™d just made me look like some unreasonable brute,โ€™

โ€œKaylaโ€ฆโ€ Tuff looked conflicted, stuck between the two.

He felt bad for Joyce, but he also didnโ€™t dare cross his wife. So, he just stood there awkwardly, not moving an inch.

โ€œTuff, you and Kayla should head back first,โ€ Amelia said, stepping forward and giving Kayla a reassuring pat on the shoulder.

Tuff thought he probably ought to say a few words to comfort Joyce. After all, his wife had just made things difficult for her.

But when the words were right on the tip of his tongue, he just couldnโ€™t bring himself to say them.

That look from Kayla was just too terrifying.

โ€œGo on. Iโ€™ve got this,โ€ Amelia said with a calm, easy smile, lightening the mood in the room.

Kayla gave Joyce a deep, lingering look before walking out.

Tuff trailed after her, eager to please.

Joyce felt a wave of bitterness. โ€˜The mighty Prescott heir, groveling like some stray mutt just for love. How utterly pathetic,โ€™ she sneered inwardly.

โ€œYou can go now, Mrs. Kingsley,โ€ Joyce said coldly, wiping her face and hair with a tissue, her tone full of dismissal.

โ€œThat water? Kayla didnโ€™t do it,โ€ Amelia said, calm but firm.

Married life had only made her more stunning, her presence even more graceful and commanding.

She was the very definition of a classy, elegant wife.

Joyceโ€™s expression changed dramatically as she really hadnโ€™t expected Amelia to say that.

โ€œMrs. Kingsley, is this how you always indulge her?โ€ Joyce let out a laugh, more out of anger than amusement.

โ€œKayla? If she can use her fists, she wonโ€™t bother talking. Throwing water or wine? Thatโ€™s way too childish for her. She wouldnโ€™t even bother with that kind of trick,โ€ Amelia replied coolly.

โ€œGo ahead and keep defending her!โ€ Joyce shot back.

Joyce stood up, ready to leave.

Amelia reached out to stop her. โ€œMiss Lambert, let me give you some advice. Donโ€™t go up against the Kingsley family. And donโ€™t even think about messing with someone elseโ€™s family.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s the big deal of the Kingsley family?โ€ Joyce asked, putting on a refined front, though her eyes were full of scorn. โ€œDo you even know who Tuff is?โ€

โ€œFlying Tiger Sect elite,โ€ Amelia replied.

โ€œYou know that? Then what about Kayla?โ€ Joyce pressed.

โ€œShe knows too.โ€ Amelia nodded slightly. โ€œMy husband is Tuffโ€™s boss.โ€

Joyce sucked in a sharp breath.

โ€˜Landon is Tuffโ€™s boss? Thereโ€™s more to this marriage than I thought,โ€™ Joyce mused.

Sheโ€™d always wonderedโ€“with Kaylaโ€™s plain looks and two kids tagging along, how could Tuff ever be interested in her?

โ€˜So itโ€™s all just because of work!โ€™ she thought.

โ€˜Poor Tuff, getting squeezed so hard by his boss.โ€™

She made a mental note to talk to Maggie laterโ€“she was definitely going to tell Maggie to make Tuff quit this job and just go home to take over the family business for good.

โ€œPetty squabbles are whatever, but if anyone dares lay a finger on Kayla, theyโ€™re making an enemy of the whole Kingsley family!โ€ Amelia said, her tone cold and resolute.

Joyce let out a mocking laugh.

โ€˜As if I care,โ€™ Joyce thought, her eyes full of disdain.

โ€œIf Tuff ever does anything to hurt Kayla, the whole Prescott family is done for,โ€ Amelia said, letting out a light laugh.

โ€˜Does Joyce even get how serious this is? Trying to steal someone elseโ€™s man without even bothering to check their family backgroundโ€“talk about clueless,โ€™ Amelia thought.

Joyce didnโ€™t believe it for a second.

Even if Tuff lost his job, he still had the Prescott family backing him up.

The Prescott family was an old-money powerhouse with deep roots.

โ€˜The Kingsley Group? As if they could ever swallow up the Prescott family,โ€™ Joyce sneered inwardly.

โ€œThe Hughes family in Lunova? Thatโ€™s my grandfatherโ€™s side. The Zuckerberg family? Thatโ€™s my motherโ€™s side,โ€ Amelia said calmly.

Joyce was completely stunned.

The Hughes and Zuckerberg families were the top dogs in Lunovaโ€™s elite circles.

Compared to them, the Prescott family was just not worth mentioning!

The Lambert family? They couldnโ€™t even compare.

โ€œMiss Lambert, I hope you know your place,โ€ Amelia said with a faint smile before turning to leave.

Her graceful, elegant figure as she walked away cut deep into Joyceโ€™s heart and pride.

โ€˜So this is where Kayla gets all her confidence from,โ€™ Joyce thought bitterly.

โ€˜But with the way Kayla acts, she totally doesnโ€™t deserve Tuff at all!โ€™ Joyce fumed inwardly.

She refused to accept this! The injustice burned in her chest. There was no way she was going to let it end like this.

Kayla stormed off, her face as dark as a storm cloud.

Tuff followed after her like a whipped pup, trying to please her with a smile. โ€œKayla, listen to meโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhat? Are you here to accuse me of splashing water at her?โ€ Kayla shot back.

โ€œNo, itโ€™s not thatโ€ฆโ€ Tuff stammered.

โ€œThen what is it?โ€ Kayla pressed.

Tuff was at a loss for words after Kayla snapped at him. After a few awkward seconds, he finally asked quietly, โ€œDoes your hand hurt?โ€

Kayla couldnโ€™t help but snort with laughter.

Her expression softened at last.

โ€œTuff, do you really mean that?โ€ Kayla asked.

โ€œOf course!โ€ Tuff replied.

Tuff took Kaylaโ€™s hand, noticing that her knuckles were flushed red.

With all his years of brawling, Tuff could tell at a glance that she mustโ€™ve landed a punch on something hard.

โ€œJeez, if you want to throw down, just do it. No point hurting yourself for nothing,โ€ Tuff muttered.

Kayla chuckled and asked, โ€œSo, if I really got into a fight with her, whose side would you be on?โ€

โ€œYours, of course!โ€ Tuff replied without a momentโ€™s hesitation.

He needed to get his wife out of there as soon as possible, or things might really end up with the cops getting called.

No way was he letting his wifeโ€™s reputation get dragged through the mud again.

โ€œSmart move,โ€ Kayla said as she opened the car door and got in.

Tuff breathed a sigh of relief, hopped into the driverโ€™s seat, and headed for home.

Kayla asked, โ€œSo, whatโ€™s your momโ€™s attitude now?โ€

โ€œPregnancy really is the ultimate trump card. Sheโ€™s not pushing us to get a divorce anymore,โ€ Tuff replied.

โ€œSo, sheโ€™s just waiting for the baby to be born before she tries to divorce us then?โ€ Kayla asked.

โ€œUhโ€ฆโ€ Tuff stammered, breaking out in a cold sweat.

โ€˜Women really do know each otherโ€“she nailed it!โ€™ he thought.

โ€œNo need to wait that long. Once my momโ€™s surgery is over, we can just come clean to your mom,โ€ Kayla said with a little scoff.

Since sheโ€™d married Tuff, she had to think about his situation too. She couldnโ€™t just turn the whole Prescott family upside down the moment they tied the knot.

โ€œYeah, yeah,โ€ Tuff nodded eagerly. โ€œNo rush. Just keep up the act and take it easy for now.โ€

Kaylaโ€™s eye twitched. โ€œAre you crazy? I was just faking it for your mom. Donโ€™t you know whether Iโ€™m actually pregnant or not?โ€

โ€œOf course I know! But hey, if you really were pregnant, I wouldnโ€™t want you to get all riled up,โ€ Tuff said with a cheeky grin.

โ€˜Just last night, we were getting adventurous with some seriously exciting new positions!โ€™ Tuff thought, a little smug.

โ€œBut since weโ€™re already lying, might as well keep it up,โ€ Tuff said. โ€œMy momโ€™s already got chicken soup simmering at home. Weโ€™ll have some when we get back.โ€

Kayla rubbed her forehead. โ€œCanโ€™t you just get your mom to go home first?โ€

โ€œShe said she wanted to stay and take care of you while youโ€™re pregnant,โ€ Tuff replied.

At that, Kayla was left speechless.
